Thank you so much for your favorite on my hands progress report!
Looking at your page, it looks like you're using deviantart mainly to teach yourself how to draw, since you haven't yet posted your own art.
I actually like to help other artists by giving them critiques on drawings if they want it, or posting figures or tutorials that someone needs.
As you can see from the hands progress report, I still have a lot of learn. But if you ever find yourself struggling with a particular concept (for example: drawing legs with different thicknesses), or want to request a particular drawing, it not only helps me learn as I try to make the tutorial, but I hope to help out a fellow learning artist too

Hi Emily and, damn, that is so nice of you!
Yes, the main reason I have yet to post anything it because I'm trying to teach myself out to draw. It's been a very hard progress since I do have to start from the basics of the basics (as in all concepts). Most artists I found started with anime art but I don't want that. Digital art is a no no for now. My goal is to simply improve the way I 'doodle' most things and start to create something I'm proud of. (I also don't post cause all my cameras are pretty weak)
That drawing you made gave me a lot of motivation! I always get to hear about artists progress are around 2-5 years but damn, those hands were so nice. You must be so dedicated to this!!
And, sure, you may have a lot to learn yet, but don't we all?
Anyways, I'll make sure to keep that. For now, I'll give you a watch and 'watch' from afar.

If and/or when you decide to post your first thing on deviantart, I'll be happy to see it, as well as your overall progress and improvement.
To be honest, I know some people on DA who post their art from the beginning: At least alright enough to call the art standard or decent, but also still definitely in need of improvement. I'm one of those people, and I know many others.
Though it's embarrassing at first to post something that you think you could do better on, sometimes posting on deviantart helps motivate you to draw more frequently and to practice, because you feel obligated by your watchers to provide them with drawings.
Though I very occasionally post some finished artwork (I'm very busy currently in college)
I'll keep a separate folder for unfinished drawings or sketches like the hand progress reports or trying to make my own "tutorial"-like drawings. It has accelerated my learning process to the point where I've figured out more in this year than I had in the last 2 years.
For example: In april I didn't make a huge amount of progress when it came to drawing hands. Then when I decided to start posting "progress reports" on deviantart, it motivated me to really dig deeper into the structure and anatomy of hands, how the fingers flex etc, because I wanted to prove to my watchers that I wanted to learn, and to also help encourage other artists that in the beginning we all suck at a certain drawing concept, and from there it takes a lot of patience and analysis to overcome that initial stage.
So don't feel afraid to post something on your deviantart page I guarantee you that someone will favorite it, or someone will give it a critique, or even if you ask me to do my own sketch of the drawing, I love to do that because it helps me learn too! Plus, deviantart is dynamic enough that once you start drawing art that you consider to be amazing, then your page will pick up in popularity pretty quickly.
But I understand if that's not your thing, just putting out a suggestion.

Honestly, Emily, you're too nice! I do hope to watch you grow as an artist, although I can't be of much help.
It's not only the shame (sure, that is definitely one of the reasons). Drawing, I'm learning now, it's very much like trial and error. But I'm a lazy perfectionist most of the times ^-^ It's not like I force myself, no. I wouldn't be trying to create art if I was forcing myself. I do it simply because I deeply enjoy it and have only noticed it now... It feels so comforting to have a pencil between my fingers and be able to create something full of feeling out of a couple of lines!
I am so glad to know you feel as if you've improved! Really, DeviantArt does seem to work wonders. And that 'trick' of yours, to stack unfinished drawings and sketches, seems like a wonderful idea. I just need to find the courage (which is...growing), the good camera (which I'll get next month since my birthday was recently and I'm buying a new phone) and the time (which I'll manage since summer break is coming).
Since you talked about college, do you see art as a possible career path, Emily? If you don't feel comfortable answering this, you don't have to. I'm just curious

I do that too. The reason I've been posting mostly progress reports lately is because I'm giving myself some time to really get down into learning and practicing. I'll have an idea in my head for months but won't want to draw it until I feel like my skills will do it justice. However, one of those things is a comic storyline, and ironically, drawing it would be the best way for me to actually improve, but I'm still a little nervous.
I don't think I'd ever have art as a full career. I'm going into biology, hopefully get a phD in biochemistry. In the later part of high school, when my confidence began to recover from a pretty awful time in my life, I decided that I wanted to make a difference in the world, and I decided my knowledge and love to learn about various biological systems and my love for asking scientific questions was how I would try to do that.
That being said, I do have a dream of one day being good enough at drawing that I'll be able to sell fan art at conventions.
What about yourself? Do you have any ideas on a possible career path?

Oh, I know that feeling too. I have so many things I want to draw but put aside for fear that my skills aren't good enough...
I wish you the best of luck, both in your practice and in your comic storyline and following your dream path. And I also hope to buy one of your fan arts one day!
No, art won't ever be a career path. I don't see it as such and don't want it as such. I initially wanted to follow something related to languages/history/geography, since those were my favourite subjects in middle school but I ended up following biology like you, although I still don't know a career path. Maybe something related to archaeology or psychology, but nothing strongly related to physics.
(Also, from what I know, our school systems are different, so my previous explanation probably didn't make much sense.)

I completely understand, physics is a nightmare to study. Even the general physics classes, which are still required for biology students, are considered really difficult at my school.
I get the impression that you have to decide your field of study before you apply to a university. Is that right, or did I misread you?

Yes, you're right.I still have time, not much, but still some so I don't worry a lot about it.
Thanks for asking! I hope everything goes well with your studying!!
And sorry for the late answer I hope we're able to talk more often ^-^
