Thank you, was there no pun intended on "damn good" or did you meticulously plan it out beforehand? As for your question, um, I don't know, I guess it depends on how motivated I am so anywhere from an hour to a week I'd say. What about you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kecharakittie In reply to DamnGoodNinja [2012-08-04 18:59:09 +0000 UTC]

Pun was definitely intended. :3

Most drawings take me a few hours to a few days (and if I don't finish it by then, it usually falls into the ghost pile never to be worked on again. >.> I hope to get back to those eventually).

I usually start out with a light sketch. When I'm satisfied with it I drastically darken all the lines and if I'm not too lazy I'll shade it in. The only one that took me a month was this one [link] because I got so bored with all the vines, leaves and flowers. x_x

One day, I hope to be able to work with all different mediums. For now though, pencil and paper's the cheapest so that's what I go with.

No, never wanted to be a civil engineer. I didn't mind the thought of being one, but it wasn't an active goal at any point. It was more of a parents' approval thing.

It's good though. To teach in Korea, all I needed was a 4 year degree in any field and I loved teaching the kids there. The guys were a little iffy, but a lot of guys tend to be no matter where I go. It was just harder to avoid in a small rural town (where I lived while I was there). I would want to go back just to see my kids. I loved them to death. They were the sweetest little things.

I actually hate traveling. Airplanes do not agree with me. I like seeing flowers, water, waterfalls, and rocks, which doesn't necessitate a trip across the globe. I actually really hate looking at most buildings. I think they fuglify a lot of potentially amazing natural beauty.

A lot of things on Ebay shipped from China has free shipping. At least that's what I've noticed, especially with cheap little things. My brother told me they sell stuff at a loss to generate a lot of good ratings and positive feedback quickly and establish themselves as a reliable seller. He said he talked to a seller once and they told him that if their rating drops below 98% or some high number like that, they shut down the account and start over. It's crazy but kinda cool to think about business-wise.

I don't plan on selling the plushies. My friend actually told me he really wanted one so I tried to find a seller. There was a woman who custom made them but she told me it would cost $200 + shipping and she only made 20" versions. I decided to make one instead and found this really nice step by step tutorial online with the complete pattern. I'm giving him a 14" one for free. It turned out though that I bought way too much material so I asked if we could make an exchange. I'd make a 21" version in exchange for him buying me a $60 pyrex bakeware set (I love cooking and I love pyrex). He said okay.

I was thinking about making extras and selling them, but my friend told me the reason why it's so hard to find Hobbes plushies (I had a hard time finding one when I was searching) is because the creator didn't want to commercialize his work. He felt it was wrong to basically rape people's wallets. He just wanted people to enjoy his comics. So I kind of want to keep to that spirit and original intent. Also, making plushies is a lot of work. @_@

I bet you're a pro at dishing out puns.

I know all about that pile heh. I have so many drawings I'd love to go back to and finish but I don't have the time or patience anymore. It seems like I spend most of my time just doing sketches but not very many finished works. Your drawing is very nicely done and I'm impressed you managed to finish it since that would have ended up in the ghost pile for me personally. Do you aspire to be an artist of some kind?

kecharakittie In reply to DamnGoodNinja [2012-08-06 02:32:01 +0000 UTC]

Nah, I'm much better at dishing out dirty jokes.

No big plans for becoming a grand artist. My original goal was to become a stay-at-home mom and work on all my hobbies on a random rotation when I had the house to myself. Maybe own a small shop with random stuffs I made (clothes, plushies, books, short stories, art, strawberry lemonade smoothies, pancakes). You know, stuffs. Currently I'm in the works to become a math teacher. :3 Exciting business. Going back to school and all that. Doing a one year credentialing program and I just got my first homework assignment of the year today.

Just finished up all the sewing on a couple Hobbes plushies I've been working on (from Calvin and Hobbes). They're the first plushies I've ever made so once their eyes come in a week or two (getting shipped from China) and I glue them on I'll post up some pix. ^^

I haven't drawn much in a while but I'm hoping to get in a few good drawings before classes and student teaching start getting in the way of my free time.

What about you? What do you do?

DamnGoodNinja In reply to kecharakittie [2012-08-06 04:14:26 +0000 UTC]

Haha, ok, I'll take your word for it.

That's a very thought out goal you have, strawberry lemonade smoothies and all though I will admit, I'm not a fan of pancakes. How's going back to school and why a math teacher?

I've never really read any of the Calvin and Hobbes comic strips but I like the artwork. I'll be curious to see your Hobbes plushies. Is China the only place you can get plushy eyes?

I just work a not so interesting but mildly entertaining job and it pays my bills but I'm HOPING that I'll be able to start getting an engineering degree in the near future. No real stay-at-home mom goals for me.

kecharakittie In reply to DamnGoodNinja [2012-08-06 18:22:49 +0000 UTC]

Ah. What kind of engineering are you hoping for? I actually have a BS in Civil Engineering, but it just wasn't my thing. I didn't do any internships so I had a hard time finding work, plus I wasn't that into it. I kind of felt like a sham saying I wanted to be an engineer or find work as an engineer.

Maybe you'll like my pancakes. I've been told they taste like fortune cookies. >.>

My classes don't actually start until August 20th but we just had our first math cohort meeting (meeting of all the students who wish to become math teachers and our supervisor who's basically in charge of all of us). It was pretty chill for the most part but from the handouts we got, I'm sure the program's going to be pretty busy and intense. I decided on being a math teacher because math, science, special ed, and bilingual teachers are really in demand right now. I forgot most of my high school Spanish, I don't want to specifically teach special ed kids (no offense to them), and I don't particularly enjoy science. I like all the critical thinking in math and how there're so many ways to solve one problem. It's like real life. :3 Plus, I'm much better at it now than I was back in high school. It really just takes a lot of practice and developing your mind in a certain way. I know most kids hate math, but that's mostly because they're frustrated and have a hard time understanding it. I love watching the light bulb go off when they finally figure it out. They get so excited and you can see how proud they are of themselves. It's awesome.

I actually originally wanted to be an elementary school teacher, but with all the budget cuts and the way things are right now, it's just not a good time. My cousin is an elementary school teacher (no tenure) and she was pink slipped (then rehired by the same school) three times. I just don't want to have to deal with that. But maybe in the future I'll go for a multiple subjects credential so I can teach elementary school. I just love the little kiddies. I actually taught elementary school English in South Korea. The majority of the kids there were just the sweetest (I taught at 3 different schools, 29 classes a week, 7 of them after school programs, grades K-6 and had over 500 students).

And I don't want to be a stay-at-home mom anymore. If I ever want to be a mom again I'm sure that'll change. But for now, Imma just stick with teaching.

I can get plushie eyes elsewhere, but I was looking for a very specific shape and color. I wanted an oval with a smooth convex out shape. No button holes. A shank back button, which has a hook in the back(ex: [link] ) would have been okay but I couldn't find one of those either. I tried Joann's Fabric store and Amazon but they didn't have the kind I wanted. I could have gotten safety eyes (the type that's normally used for stuffed animals) in the perfect shape from Canada on Ebay but that would've been like $14 ($4 + $10 shipping) per pair. Not happening. I just got a pack of 20 flat back wooden ovals for $4 (free shipping) from China. I just hope the sizing is okay for both plushies.

DamnGoodNinja In reply to kecharakittie [2012-08-07 23:08:12 +0000 UTC]

Mechanical engineering I think. It seems like the most interesting to me but who knows. Did you actually want to be a civil engineer at one time?

I see, that's cool. I was very big into math and science in high school though I doubt I could remember much of what I learned. I do speak Spanish but only because it's part of my background so that doesn't count. How many years of school do you have to do to be a math teacher and how did you get that teaching job in South Korea? Would you go back? It must be rad to even have the chance to do it once.

I have no plushie making experience so I don't really know much about eyes or buttons. I am surprised you got free shipping from China. I'll be interested in seeing the finished product. Are you planning on selling them?

What do you mean by iffy? if you don't mind me asking

I'm surprised you don't like traveling. I personally just don't like seeing things that are very common, like big cities for example. It's all the same to me and I have no interest, just give me some mountains, lakes and snow. Have you ever been to New England? Lots of wonderful nature over here.

Anyway, sorry for the late response, hope you're doing well. Your plushies are very nice btw.

No worries. I'm doing alright.

Yeah. Math teacher is a sure thing.

I don't mind you asking. By iffy I mean I had a stalker within my first 3 weeks moving into my apartment there, the maintenance guy who lived in my apartment building and worked at my main school (I taught at 3 schools) hit on me, as did the post man who got my number from my school when I had to sign for a package I had shipped there, as did a married teacher and a European guy who sat next to me on the bus and talked to me in very broken Korean.

And when I say it happens everywhere, it's because on a bus in Cali a fat black man in a wheelchair tried to get me to be his in home nurse and followed me off the bus after I rejected him. I've been stopped by a homeless black man who explicitly told me what he wanted to do to me sexually after I rejected his "free hugs" and "free kisses." I've had a couple Hispanic guys follow me when I was walking somewhere. One was on my way to work. He followed me for 4 blocks trying to get my phone number though I very clearly told him I did not want to give it to him. One pretended he'd just gotten off work (security guard of some sort) and started walking with me but as I kept walking further and further away from his work place, he had to turn around and go back.

It's why I hardly ever go out in public unless I absolutely have to. It's quite uncomfortable. I don't find it flattering when guys follow me persistently, check me out from their cars, turn their heads and stare or lower their line of sight to try and get a look up my skirt/dress.

New England? Like the east coast? I've been to every state in the US minus Alaska. I don't need to go anywhere fancy. Just put me somewhere with lots of flowers, rocks or water and I'll be happy. I'd love to just lay on a slab of rock next to a lake surrounded by trees.

What places have you been to? Personally, I love the summer palace in China. It's gorgeous.

I see, I'm sorry. It seems like your very popular. I've never followed anyone or had anyone follow me except for this one dude who wanted my wallet. So what do you do to keep boredom at bay? Other than do dance covers and artsy stuff I mean.

I haven't really been outside of New England much. Pennsylvania was like the furthest I've been. What's the summer palace?

The Summer Palace is a gorgeous place in China. It was like a huge getaway for royalties.

[link]
[link]

I don't care too much about buildings. I just love the greenery and water. And I love bridges (when they're not made of steel).

I liked this spot in particular. The pictures don't do it justice and when I went it was so much more beautiful with the lotus flowers in bloom.
[link]

To keep boredom at bay, other than dancing and artsy stuff, I sometimes write or play silly facebook games with my friend, chat, webcam, practice some piano songs, sew, listen to pandora and check up on lyrics to sing songs, find some new and interesting recipe online to try out. The last thing I tried out was some Korean bbq, which turned out absolutely delicious. I love cooking. Sometimes I write in my xanga, which sorely needs to be updated btw. x.x
