I've been thinking about world-building for the Nautilus Comics Universe and I've decided I'll focus on one character and expand on his/her mythos before moving on to another character.

Just a quick question about world-building:
In order to differentiate myself between what Marvel and DC have done, I've decided that science and technological-based heroes/villains will be the most prominent while those born with the "super-gene" will be a minority group.
My problem is, how do I explain the origin of this "super-gene" in a creative way that doesn't rip off the X-Men or DC's Metahumans?

Also, if I could offer some advice:
Don't be afraid to look at other things besides the heroes themselves for inspiration! For example, my comedic relief hero Conundrum was actually inspired heavily on a villain from Marvel, Impossible Man!
Fact is, you can find a lot of funny heroes to inspire you, but there are just as many funny villains, if not even more!
