I've been OK. Not too busy artwise, so I haven't been around DA much. Either procrastinating or going through some anxiety bullshit, so I haven't done much but trying to keep my skills up a bit. Way to many indie games on PC distracting me too.

Aw sorry to hear the anxiety's kicking you about I know how that can go. Which indies you got on the go? I've been playing the shit out of Hotline Miami and Exceed of late.

monkeynohito In reply to PoisonRemedy [2014-05-01 14:36:21 +0000 UTC]
Hotline was a lot of fun, but really disappointed by the ending and its subtext, I'm not sure if I'm too enthused about the sequel. Everything I hear about it has a really smug Mark Millar sort of commentary on the audience thing going. There's a point where I already couldn't give two shits about how a vegan feels about me eating a hamburger, so I have zero patience for the cook who grilled the burger wagging his finger at me.
We're really seeing an STG Renaissance on PC these days though, aren't we? I love them, but I'm awful at them. -_-Β Exceed trilogy is cool, but a little too beyond my skill level to get very much out of them. Another one that's really cute, but ball-punchingly difficult is Flying Red Barrel. I've recently started to avoid continues though and I think that's been helping me improve, so maybe I should get back to them? Most recent STG has been Reflex. Really great gameplay storytelling in that one; Sagittarius stage is a fucking masterpiece.

PoisonRemedy In reply to monkeynohito [2014-05-01 19:54:33 +0000 UTC]
Trouble with Exceed is that there's not an awful lot of connectivity (well on Gun Bullet Children anyway) or sense of weight to what's going on, so it's incredibly easy to just plow into something you didn't really feel was there. Like when the screen fills up with bullets and explosions on say Strikers 1945 or Cho Ren Sha, you can feel that going on and you go into full ninja mode as much as poss, but Exceed just kind of splatters the screen with stuff that feels inconsequential but is actually deadly. I've managed to get to the third boss but not a lot further. Plus goddamnit the first boss is like a difficulty spike you could carve Mount Rushmore out of. I lose like 3 continues taking that muppet down then I've only got one to get through the rest of the game.
Ether Vapor Remaster's one to get hold of if you can, the demo version is free and has the entire first three stages to play through. It's got a solid game mechanic, and pretty nice graphics. Also has nice anime character design that ISN'T flying Lolita's firing pink bullets out of their pettycoats. Not that there's anything wrong with that lol. Feels more kind of like the Macross game you wish they would've made...but instead we got Robotech Advance *makes face like cow chewing a wasp*. Also DotEmu have a really sweet combo package of the Raiden Fighters games and also another that combos up a load of IREM arcade convos
I'll have to give the Altynex series a blast then it does look really nice I'm probably going to eventually upgrade to the full version of Strania as well, that's a quite inventive little title, kind of like Probotector meets Sylpheed. I did have a look at Flying Red Barrel, might have to give it a stab soon. The same company have a mech based side scroller called Cloudphobia that also looks nifty.

I have Ether Vapor Remaster, but haven't played much. I just have a really stupid amount of games from bundles and sales and only so much time in a day. Cloudphobia actually feels similar to it, but more traditional though it has some really clever mechanics like rushing against a time limit and having to stop bads from passing you to hit your mothership. Actually, I'm thinking I wanted to beat that before getting into Ether Vapor more.
Edelweiss, the devs behind Ether Vapor, also have a new game, Astebreed, that looks pretty cool. There's an English version of it released on Japanese sites, but for some reason, somebody's dragging their heels getting it up on English sites. Probably some bureaucratic bullshit.
That IREM Arcade pack is good stuff. They really loved those enormous sprites though. You play newer shooters and the actual hitbox is manageable, but those IREM games will trip you up on the tiniest fraction of a pixel. Cosmic Cop feels like Gradius in a friggin bus, haha.
DotEmu also did the Metal Slug 3 port which is slick as hell even though the actual game is a bit blah for that series. The multiple path thing is neat, but the gameplay is actually a little tedious. 2nd level is full of zombies that take a ton of shots and it gets to be a real slog because you have to brute force continues or advance at a safe crawl. Still, a fun game as games go, just wish it was the anthology I used to have on ps2.

Haha nice that you've got the IREM stuff and Ether already And just looked at Asterbreed and it looks pretty slick stuff Seems there's a trial version knocking about? Might look into hitting that up. Yeah I've been doing okay in not overloading myself on the PC despite the bevy of downloadables, but the 360 has been another matter since we got a Computer Exchange in walking distance of my house <_<. I think the other thing is that my PC is in my room so I just play whenever where the XBox is in the shared lounge on the decent TV. Also PC loading times don't suck ass. I doubt I'd be anywhere near finishing some of the games I have if they were on XBox cos waiting to reload after death would eventually kill my drive.
I like the three-gun from the start mechanic on Ether, it's nice and out of the 'installed weapon loadout-no powerups' games it's one of the best systems I've used. It's the only thing I'm not really down with with Under Defeat which I'm also playing (read enjoying having an epic struggle with) on the shooter front, that you can't power up your helicopter in any way, other than to choose a different turret (all of which are useless anyway)). I also like the gradually evolving player stocks. That is a really nice feature.
Oh god yes. Cosmic Cop and Dragon Breed are excellent, but by god having those massive sprites makes the games hard. Talk about broad side of a barn. Especially Dragon Breed. It's like Saint Dragon on a weightgain regime! You've got to move like a greased stoat down a drainpipe to get out of the way in time on those. I just love finally having a home copy of Undercover Cops without limited credits. Like I used to play that game a LOT as a little kid in the arcades. And R-Type Leo is the business . Oh, can you get ANYWHERE on Ninja Spirit btw? I've gotten to the first boss but ouch. Hard game is hard.
Oh right? Cool Yeah, tbh I'm a Metal Slug 4 man myself, all the silly of 3 with none of the 'dear god how long is this thing?!'. And I love the yetis xDD. I did see MS3 on Steam and consider it as a purchase. Btw on the subject of sprite games and Steam, don't know if you have it already (you might) but I was really pleasantly surprised and stoked with Savant: The Ascent. I wish it had been longer but the gameplay is great and it has a good combo of looks and sound .

Yeah, I've skipped out on the last gen of consoles though I may pick up a PS3 now that 4 is out. PC games have just been so much cheaper and convenient, I haven't had the need. Still miss a lot of niche Japanese games, but hell, we're seeing a lot of those on PC now too. Trails in the Sky will even be giving me a JRPG fix soon.
I think my biggest problem with Ether Vapor was getting too excited about the blade and not being able to use it for crap. Cloudphobia has one too, but it's tough enough to use I don't bother. In EVR though, it's decent enough you can feel like you can do a run with it and end up getting mangled. Nice thing about Reflex is, while it's impossible to kill everything with just reflected shots, you really can get a lot of mileage out of a shield-only run and that's actually the best way to milk the bosses.
Actually, Dragon Breed isn't so bad since the dragon itself is impervious and his tail makes a pretty good weapon and shield to mitigate a lot of stray bullets. Cosmic Cop and In the Hunt are real ball busters though. Half the time you have no clue what actually hit you. They're all tough in a fairly satisfying way though where you feel like you could get actually get better and you can get right back into the action. Biggest problem with Ninja Spirit is you absolutely suck without power-ups so if you die once, you're pretty much fucked because they won't be coming around again for a while. I don't think I've seen the second stage either. Mr. Heli and Hammerin Harry were nice additions to the pack too. The Gunforce games are interesting, but they feel like weird Metal Slug knock-offs rather than their precursors, haha.
MS3 was half off earlier this week, so I picked it up. It's a solid port with a couple nice features, but hard to justify the full price of $7.99 when you can pick up something like Alien Soldier for $2.99. At $3.99, I thought it was worth it just to hand money to SNK and DotEmu though. :3 I'd really like to get KOF sometime, but I'm not sure if my computer can handle it...new PC is prolly a better investment than a PS3.
Savant: The Ascent was a nice hidden gem I think I got from a bundle a while ago. Really short, but yeah it was slick. Arguably, with the short length, it has a lot of score attack value too.

Agreed. I bought a 360 as a kind of 'self gift' after I got paid for some refurbishment work I did with my family. Otherwise I'd probably still be working with the PS2 (which I still play a fair bit anyway ). The indie market is really nice on the PC too so I think that's made bigger companies clock what a market there is for niche stuff too and hopefully like you say we're going to see more left field releases get out there now packaging and manufacture isn't such an issue. I still prefer having a physical item but I only have so much space (given I share a box room with the house's boiler lol). Hopefully eventually it'll force the big guns to up their game a little. I would far rather play Meat Boy or Torchlight or the like than an overhyped piece of garbage like Dead Space 3 (I literally drool when Dead Space is mentioned but Dead Space 3 is the laziest, poorest excuse for a survival horror I've ever played. Bear in mind I've tried the post Team Silent Silent Hills, and Resident Evil 5 and 6. DS3 is still the worst.) or Tenchu Fatal Shadows. Gameplay is still everything. Which is nice
Shooters with melee combat irritate the hell out of me normally tbh, it's not that I hate the idea it's that it's so poorly thought out half the time. Having to slug a button for a combo at the same time as retaining pixel perfect control is not something that's easy to do. I mean even games that have good melee like Red Star or Metal Slug it's still tricky when you've got a room full of dudes blasting at you. Strania's real sticking point is having some bosses that are 'shooting' bosses and some bosses that are completely indestructible without using a sword. It'd be okay but the sword is tiny so you have to have the reactions of a jungle cat on a cocaine binge to get it right and not get a face full of a laser beam. Also you have to pick it up, so you can easily take a useless gun to a sword fight and vice versa.
Yeah Dragon Breed is certainly less heinous than Cosmic Cop for it. Its still very claustrophobic mind. But that said I think it's bearing out to be a sleeper favourite on that pack. I do love the music and the graphical style is excellent. Hmm, that's interesting. I think because it was a 'continuous' continue system, In the Hunt didn't really give me too much rage. I kind of just accepted that I was going to die over and over and over. I wouldn't want to try and perfect that game or even try and get a 1 credit run though. It's insane, there is just so much shit going on. Plus that bizarre 'user controlled scrolling' took an awful lot to get used to. I still often plow straight into something which was off screen to my right, which seems very cheap. I did quite like the one where you were witches. Hmm, Gunforce 1 feels like a poor man's Contra (not in a bad way, like I enjoyed it a lot and finished it) or Revenge of Shinobi with guns to me. It was very noticeably old school. Elements of Ninja Gaiden on the NES to it too. Gunforce 2, it's...it's very pretty and noisy, but for all of that, it's actually not much fun. Like you say despite being the evolutionary prequel to Metal Slug for Nazca, it's really not got an awful lot of character. Which is strange to say because visually it's massively inventive. It's just not exciting or engaging to me.
Haha on the subject though, Vigilante should've stayed buried am I right? That game seemed bad in the 80s, now it's like 'HOW THE HELL WAS ANYONE SUPPOSED TO GET ANYWHEREAAARGHSOUNFAIRRAGEQUIT'.
Yeah I saw MS3 was pretty cheap everywhere. I'm trying actively at the moment to finish the games I've got before I buy new ones cos I went on a bit of a spree last month while I was signed off work due to bullying setting off my anxiety, basically in a 'stay sane' type movement, so now I've got a fairly big wad of things I'm halfway through. Plus I have like 3 Metal Slug games and have played through MS3 several times even tho it's one I don't physically own. I think if I buy another one it'll probably be 7/XX or Advance for my DS. Picked the DS up dirt cheap and just love it. It's like having a portable hybrid of a SNES and a PSX. I thought Alien Soldier had gone freeware now? I got mine for free along with MUSHA from somewhere. Couldn't tell you where tho was a long time back. That said, I HATE Alien Soldier. I like most of Treasure's games but I've always thought that's a game that got loads of hype purely for it's difficulty and rarity, where in actuality, it's dreadful and so hard I'd even go so far as to say it's broken by it's difficulty level.

Y'know, I feel like continue abuse really saps a lot of my enjoyment of a game, doesn't feel like an accomplishment if I've continued 40 times, but so many arcade games were designed to be quarter munchers, it's hard to find a middle ground. I'll certainly never no-death a game either, I've come to accept I'm actually on the bad to average side of gaming skills, haha. Should prolly start budgeting continues better than none or infinite.
One thing I have noticed about the IREM games (been firing them up during this conversation, lol), the visuals can get really clogged up by effects. So many explosions and debris and smoke in Gunforce 2 or In the Hunt that you're practically playing blind at some points. Like I said before, at least half the time, you never even see a hit coming and that can be majorly unsatisfying. For as frustrating as they can be, I always know exactly how I got killed in a newer bullet hell shooter.
Since I called it a Metal Slug knock-off, Gunforce 2 has been pretty amusing, actually. I keep imagining goofy Engrish tag-lines while playing: 'Play the game that is like popular metal shooting game.' 'The action is the multiplication factor of 2 by two guns have!' 'Save the cute girl of wartime P.O.W. with you just power! Gratitude is the expression they are exchange for safety.'
Superior Soldier is also pretty awful too. That's the fighting game isn't it? It's hard to believe that fighting games managed to survive those dark times when they were barely more complex than a platformer, haha.
I think my favorite sleeper in the pack is Hammerin Harry though. They packed so much charm into it, it's a good go-to for cheering up. Mr. Heli is like that too, but it's just tough enough without being unfair to really shame you, lol.
And as frustrating as it is to play, Alien Soldier is a great spectacle with a lot of nice gameplay storytelling. Though yeah, that's moot if you can never manage to see any of it.
By the way, it sounds like Treasure is pretty pleased with their release of Ikaruga on Steam, so they're planning more ports and even new titles for it. Falcom and Marvelous are also pretty pumped about Steam.

I think it's when a game has that sweet spot of enabling you to gradually survive longer or all the way through on one set of lives that the unlimited continues thing seems worthwhile. It means you can see the whole game you paid for, and you can start to work out the path through the game bit by bit and start to learn how to survive better. I have eventually reached a point where I can finish Strikers 1945 I and II in a credit apiece. That's the ideal I think, a game that's not so punishing that you're dying over and over and that skill eventually develops in. As a for instance, I'm now at a point where I can get roughly about halfway through Metal Slug 1 in my first batch of lives. Which isn't bad going at all for a Metal Slug game lol. But there are games where you can tell that they were built to make money out of the punter first and foremost as when they come into home conversions and a credit cap gets put on them, you can't finish them.
The SNES version of Undercover Cops is impossible to get the good (Normal or above difficulty on SNES, you just get it auto on the arcade version) ending on because they only gave you 4 credits and you can't get anymore. Likewise, you ever managed to finish Golden Axe on a home conversion? I've come close on the Game Boy Advance version, and I finished the C64 one back in the day, but that could only handle one bad guy on screen at once lmao. I think with the benefit of hindsight, so many arcade games weren't 'hard' they were intentionally unfair. 12Stag's scoring system was one for instance. It's rather unrewarding to play it at all to be honest, it's so hard to do well at, but way too easy to finish, cos it's such a fast game you can just brute force it in about 15 minutes flat. But your score will be like 112pts or something cos it's so nigh-impossible to not die. It's a shame because it has some ingenious and very original settings and graphic design.
Oh god yes. The debris issue is a constant thing with sprite games. I find unless you're looking at something with transparency you can rapidly disappear in a cloud of things blowing up and not know where you immediately are and fly into a bullet or the like. Last Resort was terrible for that, as were a few of the other SNK games if I remember correctly. And Strider. Dear god Strider. Never mind the sprite flicker on Strider either. Ouch. Hard near broken game was hard near broken lol.
Haha what's the subtitle to the original, something like 'GUNFORCE FIRE ENGULFED DANGER ISLAND' or the like?
Superior Soldier is a sure sign there's always one genre even a good company can't quite nail. It's pretty much broken. It's got 90s SNK difficulty issues (even on Easy I don't think I've won a single match yet) and the character design is just like 'what is this, an attempt to out-lame Time Killers and Expect no Mercy?'. That said, on the obscure fighters front, I would totally snap up an HD update of Pray for Death. I really loved that game. And at least Superior Soldiers is ripping off Street Fighter and Fatal Fury rather than Mortal Kombat so it's not got horrific digitised graphics lol.
I've not really got my head around Hammerin' Harry yet, I had a crack at it but those old school platform games tend to destroy me pretty easy so I was a bit like 'It's late and I am obviously inhabiting suckville tonight' so left it for later. Mr Heli again, I'm not really very good at that kind of game.
Yeah that's the thing. I mean I played it for free so I'm not gonna moan unduly, but it is frustrating to have a game that's had so much work put into it be so goddamn impenetrable.
Oh yeah? That is great news Maybe we'll even see some new games out of them then

Oh yeah, looked up the article again and new PC game from Treasure is definitely gonna happen: www.siliconera.com/2014/01/29/β¦ They sound really excited about the possibilities. I'm really excited about the possibilities, lol.
I've actually been keeping pretty close tabs on the Japanese PC indie scene and running a list on my fledgeling blog: monkeytypeh.blogspot.com/2014/β¦ Learned a lot doing the research. Not sure what else I should do with the blog though. I wrote a slightly ranty piece about recent Final Fantasy games, but I'm not happy adding to the pile of 'Here's my opinion, internet! Go me!' Should prolly feature games, but not sure what format to go for since I want to objectively proselytize and critique that market instead of tossing my opinion around or getting into the review cycle. Something more like Hardcore Gaming 101.
In more important news, the subtitle is actually 'Battle Fire Engulfed Terror Island.' The great thing about a lot of Japanese games is the sincerity. A lot of western games, even a lot of indie games now, you see contrivances for the sake of sales or popularity or shit buried under five layers of irony or the general Protestant ideal that it's super bad to unapologeticly enjoy ourselves with anything. A Japanese dev is so much more likely to think, 'I like ramen and tanks, so let's mix them in a game and it'll be awesome,' and go from there as a basis. We tend to think, 'I like guns and bikinis, so what central focus can I wrap that around so it isn't just a game that I like?'
Hammerin Harry is a little hard to get used to because while it's an action game, that action often has a slight puzzle element. Like, you could just run up and hit a guy, but it's easier to figure out the environmental element to take him out easier. The bosses have satisfying tricks too.

Aww that'll be cool! Hopefully it'll be a bit more Gunstar a bit less Ikaruga. Although I wouldn't mind a tightened up more twitchy Ikaruga sequel. Something with a bit more bullethell and responsiveness. AND NO F**KING BOSS TIME LIMITS lmao. That made me rage.
Haha nice! I blog intermittently (mainly about horror movies) over here: tomrants21.wordpress.com/ I will be sure to check that blog out. Most folks who write about new FF tend to get pretty ranty I wouldn't worry about it xDDD. I know what you mean, when I do blog I try my best to be entertaining but fair, so it's not boring to read but I'm giving (most) things the benefit of the doubt. Aside from the Blair Witch. That can go to hell and die.
Haha oh right! Hmm yeah, I think you're right. I'm frustrated with Haruneko Games atm for their continuing releasing (well, twice but they only HAVE three games) of amazing old school platformers, but cynically using anime chicks with big tits to sell them. Akane the Kunoichi and Amazing Princess Sarah are both absolutely bang on old-school 2D arcade games that wouldn't have looked out of place on the SNES but they've got title screens that make me cringe, and would make me openly apologise to anyone I was dating who saw them. Yeah I know what you're getting at. Currently I'm trying to basically make the game that I want to make rather than force stuff into it because it 'should' be there with Darkwall the horror-adventure I'm trying to wring out of RPGMaker.
That said, Gundeadligne should come with a 'This game makes Cutey Honey look practically Catholic' warning. It wasn't that great a STG to start with, but once it started throwing a continuous stream of nude bosses at me, it and it's prequel both got uninstalled. Dude. I felt dirty. I haven't felt that creeped out since I downloaded GunsHell. Frickin' hentai Shooters man. Creep me out.
I do keep meaning to revisit the IREM pack, 'side from anything else, me and Image Fight still have some talking to do lol (I WILL beat that first boss. That's all I want. I manage that, I'll be happy. I'm already well aware that by surviving the opening 5 seconds I've probably done better than 99% of Britain would, but dammit that boss must DIE!). So maybe I'll drop in on Hammerin' Harry too.

Remember the Captain Magpie Ravenova drawing you did back in 2008? What I had in mind was Captain Magpie actually smoking her pipe. She would be blowing a cloud of smoke in the process.

I might get around to it. I haven't been drawing much, busy and tired with work lately, but yeah, that sounds good, I'll keep it in mind.
