Sorry about the late reply dude.

Essentially, this event is connected with the "War of the Pacific" (Guerra del Pacífico), called that way because of the connection of the in-conflict countries with the Pacific Ocean. Chile was not the only one which were interested on mining the zones which such chemical was present (Antofagasta and Tarapaca concentrated a great amount of saltpetre). Peru and Bolivia were eager to reach an economic development mining on such places. This conflict of interest led to the Guerra del Pacífico back in 1879, keeping on the fight for four years.

Saltpetre was important because it was used as an effective fertilizer and as a base for creating explosives. The economic benefit saltpetre brought to the country was enormous. Chile reach an economic development through exportations around the world. British companies were in charge of the facilities, they administered what it was earned, and it was not few money... we are talking about big amounts of it. The biggest issue in the exploitation was the precarious conditions mine workers were experiencing --low salaries, bad life conditions, social classes were extremely lower or extremely higher, being the latter attributed to the British families which were managing the minefields.

Changes in the industry were caused by the creation of synthetic saltpetre, scaring investors and causing the industry of natural saltpetre be abandoned. The "Saltpetre Crisis" was begun, leaving mineworkers with no work.

It was good while it lasted.

Oh my well this was really cool to read! So from what it seems that war lead to chile completely land locking Bolivia as well hmm interesting. So with that when this was going on where Peru and Bolivia pitted against Chile to try and stop the expansion of the resources? Actually with that have you heard of a place called humberstone?


Oh wow so from what your describing there it sounds like chile had a industrial revolution based on what you said, exploitation of workers horrible hours and working conditions, reminds me of 18th century Lomdon. With that o think I heard about that I think I remember reading something about once shipped over seas the U.K would turn all that into bombs half the time, cool!

Hmm interesting didn't that happen sometime in the 1980s? How'd you guys pull through that crisis?

Nope. Everything was very prior to 1980. It was old times.

The Saltpetre Crisis was not overcome. The industry went kaput! Fortunately, Chile found another way to generate revenues: Copper and Lithium.

We export by lots such elements. We lost one thing, but we carried on with two more.
