# About me
I am graphic designer & illustrator from Finland. I absolutely love drawing and art history. I draw without square grids or projections. I believe Michelangelo Buonnarotti's advice: " Measure only with eye." After I left behind grids and projections, I really started to draw more freely. In my opinion the best drawings are not just like the reference photographs. If a drawing looks exactly like a photo, why not just take a shoot?I admire artists who could draw & paint.
For example:
Michelangelo
Rubens
Rembrandt
Ingres
Repin
Degas
Klimt
If you ask who is my favorite artist here at DA I couldn't be sure, but if I must have to mention only one, my answer is Derek Jones. You could find his absolutely fantastic gallery here:
derekjones.deviantart.com/gallβ¦
I like also Nikolai Blokhin's beautiful work. Especially his drawings. I think you can't find him at DA, but there is his website:

Fantastic art. I like your philosophy on drawing by eye only. Also I try to remember to not make it like the photo but end up doing it anyway.

Thanks! Measuring with your eyes makes drawing process much more enjoyable, faster and challanges you more than tracing. It will make you a better artist, it makes your drawings (or paintings) more original than just copies of photography.

And I do not have the patience for all the measuring and lines etc. Sometime I see the lines on the paper in my mindΒ as I am drawing, doe that ever happen to you? It is weird!

Hi Olli, you have a wonderful gallery, but what mainly drew me here is your work with toned paper and white pencil and/or pen.Β I'm working with that myself and am always looking for good examples.Β I'm pretty much working purely in ink, because, I don't know, I just like ink.Β But there is a lot to be learned from studying wonderful drawings such as yours.
And BTW, I agree with your comments on the use of grids and photo-realistic drawings.Β I tried using grids, but the results were never as good as my freehand drawings.Β I thought I was just bad at grids, so it's nice to hear of someone else with the same experience.

It is OK to use grids or projections, but when one can really draw, he/she can draw without these methods. The real magic is when one sees something, he just picks a pencil, looks sharp and draws what he see in front of him on the piece of paper. Projecting a picture on surface of a paper or using grids is not so direct way to draw. Anybody could draw on the projected picture and get the proportions right (which is the most hard thing to do), and most of people learns using grids very easily and do the same thing, but when you draw more directly, without any help of such things you have to understand the whole thing, understand the scale and proportions, many times you have to understand things you could not even see. Things which are behind or under the other shapes for example. Especially when you draw a human figure. And when you draw directly without help of grids or projections, you have to filter everything more through your brains, and it makes the drawing looks more original, because you have to put some of your thoughts on the surface of a paper.

Yes, it's very interesting.Β I once did a quick sketch (like 10 minutes) in ballpoint pen of a "steampunk Marlene Dietrich".Β The proportions were all wrong, and the face didn't look quite right, but it totally captured the essence of what I wanted.Β I tried several times to do a more careful drawing of her, using references, and while they were more "accurate", they did not capture the sense I had in the sketch.Β I guess the goal is to merge that artistic eye with good technical skill, so you can truly capture your vision on paper.
