oooh did he really break a vow? from what i understand no god is above the styx so it should have worked. unless the "wording" of the promise makes it possible to "cheat".

Gods who break oaths on the Styx apparently "get off lightly" on the account of being immortal, such as when  Zeus and Poseidon broke the oath of having no more demigod children after the disastrous end of World War II. It is unknown what would happen if a lesser entity were to break an oath on the Styx, but it is considered unpleasant.

Yep, they did swear on the Styx, but got off lightly. Poseidon is decent, and Hades kept his oath, thou the pact was dissolved because of Percy.

Vanessa is kinda similar, she's unable to break a promise, one of her ways of keeping herself 'anchored' by giving herself limits. A promise from her, is unbreakable, even if it isn't made on Styx. Thou Styx would let her get off easy, as they're close friends.
