Heads up, Garrow's Law has been commissioned for a second series, so you'll be able to watch it on the tele at the end of this year!

I'm a lovely person.

No, but seriously, it was good? It just seems... so... forced. The concept, I mean.

I don't think it does seem forced. The Phantom died in the book, but Andrew Lloyd Webber chose to let him live in his musical, probably so that he could return to the characters. This sequel's been brewing for 20 years, and it flows, it works. It does. There are bars from the original musical sprinkled into the new one. The music is good. The characters are developed. I didn't find it forced at all, I just think it's wonderful.

I wrote a more detailed review on my tumblr blog here if you're interested:

I did have a couple of songs from Avenue Q on my iTunes a long while back. They were quite funny. I wouldn't mind seeing it but it wouldn't be my first choice. Hayley said I'd like it, so maybe someday! And the actors weren't really doing anything as such during Beneath A Moonless Sky, just singing and getting really close and then pulling apart upon occasion. Was just very intense and made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end more than once. And Tam Mutu and Sierra Boggess have such beautiful well-matched voices. Cassie didn't like that song so much, she said it was a bit too literal for her.

I think if you're that skeptical about it and that purist then even if you did go see it you probably wouldn't enjoy it 'cause you seem to have already made up your mind to hate it. I bought the CD with an open mind and found to quite like it, and then the more I listened, the more I found I loved it. My housemate, who studies music, found he liked it too and we've just been having squee-fests together and you know what they can be like. He didn't get to see it 'cause of the volcano which you might have read in my review so he's going to see it in August and I'll probably go again.

It's not as dark as the original Phantom, or as dreamy-sounding. It's brighter and more Belle Epoque based. 19th century seaside, that sort of thing (think Brighton only not as skank). And the Phantom lives above Coney Island rather than below. If you watch the Freak Show scene in the Phantom of the Opera film, the music that plays during that scene is used in Love Never Dies as the theme music for Coney Island.

Phantastic, hmmm? Lol.

"Song wise, I think my favourite was Beneath A Moonless Sky. The actors were really going for it, it was almost too sexually intense to watch comfortably."

I'm curious as to what exactly happens during this song.

And hmmm. Your rave review has made me genuinely curious now. I'm still uber-skeptical, but the curiosity is definitely there. I still don't think there should be a sequel, on principle that the original musical adaptation had a wonderful open-ended ending that SHOULDN'T be finished, if you know what I mean. I don't *want* to know what happened to the Phantom, he should just disappear. But, I suppose, if a sequel MUST be made (which it shouldn't, lol) then at least it's apparently a good one.

I shall quietly grumble about its existence, but I may eventually see it when I have money to burn.

In related news, I recently saw Avenue Q, which is hilarious. I didn't think it'd be that funny, but I snorted several times and had tears in my eyes at points. It's full of harsh life truths as well, which I found particularly appealing!

raefalcon In reply to Sallyella [2010-04-01 13:56:01 +0000 UTC]

I'm pretty sure I'm avoiding work more than you, lol. For example, see below.

"You imagine you're in love with her?" The vampire chuckled quietly, shaking his head as if addressing a child, "Demetri... my love, she's not your salvation. You want her because she's human, you desire her because she is Illiana to a fault. She can't save you, Demetri, she cannot wipe away all those dirty little secrets, those delicious sins that you've enjoyed with all your lusting heart." Nikoli kept his eyes on Demetri's as he stroked the unconscious girl's hair, lightly. Sensually. Possessively. Demetri swallowed, tensing as if readying himself for a fight, but did not move. Not while Nikoli still had control of Rani.
"You're wrong. I do love her."
"Oh, Demetri, no, you don't. She's a possession. You want to have her, and keep her. Fuck her. It is an obsession. You cannot love, no more than I can."
"I can love. I am not you."
"No, but we are the same."
"I am nothing like you!" hissed Demetri.
Nikoli's eyes flashed, snarling, "You are exactly like me!"

I'd like to point out that this scene is completely irrelevant to the part of the story I am currently on.

So not only are you avoiding uni work, you are also avoiding story work. For SHAME. Although this little scene is very nice. Poor Demetri. He's just so... weak. I'm just about to type up what I wrote this morning. It's a very boring scene so I am distracting myself with deviantART and cooking pizza.

raefalcon In reply to Sallyella [2010-04-01 14:02:50 +0000 UTC]

He's terribly weak. I actually get angry at him sometimes for not having a backbone, but unfortunately I can't fix that without breaking character, so he shall remain a coward and I will have to put up with it.

Boring scene, hmmm? I take it Kale (entirely was about to type Kennit) isn't having sex?

Sallyella In reply to raefalcon [2010-04-01 14:09:38 +0000 UTC]

You're only at the beginning of the book though, right? If you want to give him some backbone it won't take much character tweaking. It's never too late to change a character if you can make it work. They develop as the story goes on and all that jazz, Jaspher being my example.

And no, alas, he is not. Still not there yet. Melora's moaning at her dad because Jaspher's getting a promotion of sorts and she isn't 'cause she's useless. Soon though, she'll run away to the docks and run into Mr Sleaze himself. Then things might get interesting. But for now... *yawn*.

raefalcon In reply to Sallyella [2010-04-01 14:17:19 +0000 UTC]

But if Demi has backbone, then he's not the same. He only has backbone when he's with Lian, and that's because it's Lian's backbone, lol. Oh, that's another thing. She's staying put for a while, because I wuv her.

Solution to boring moments: Turn your story into a porno.
