Thanks Ric - Probably not the best investment you've made - but I appreciate the thought... (no idea what to do with it?)

Thanks for the watch and have fun with the lino - I love it of course! i have been exploring some more painterly effects but keen to get back to some good old sharp cutting - if I can be of any help whatsoever, hit me up.

Thanks much for the offer of help, are you a psychiatrist ?

Do you ever carve wood blocks? Do you think I can do these with my Speedball lino tools without ruining them or should I invest in separate tools?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DigReverend In reply to ricmerry [2011-03-25 23:43:54 +0000 UTC]

lol - No not a psyche, unless my own self-medication counts!
The lino tools aren't really suitable for wood, though cheap wood cutters are available. If using wood, MDF (medium density fibreboard) makes a good starting material, though it has no grain, it is easy to carve and obtain.

ricmerry In reply to DigReverend [2011-03-30 23:27:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I have some cheap tools on order now. I tried a Dremel the other day but that will have limited use with the bits I have (which are several). I'm familiar with MDF but only as mouldings and such. I didn't know it came in larger dimensions.
I pretty much screwed up registration on my 1st reduction print on lino. What do you use for a registration method?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DigReverend In reply to ricmerry [2011-03-31 00:07:58 +0000 UTC]

You can get MDF in sheets usually, about 1.5 cm thick.
Registration is difficult by hand and however good you are, you will always muck some up, which with multiple colours can be costly. I stick my blocks onto a board and use card 'lays' on 2 sides to lay the paper up, it falls in exactly the same place each time, without any issue or need for the eye. This means the paper is on top of the block through the press. The normal way to do this involves using a frisket. Basically you make a window, the size of your print in a larger piece of card. You mount your plate on a slightly larger sheet of card/wood and make marks where the 2 leading edges pf the print block backing sit on the 'window' card. Each colour, you place the window on your print, the block can then be lowered into position where the marks are and it should be pretty close each time. this also protects the border around the image during printing. Affixing a lino block to hardboard also prevents stretching through the press, which can make a big difference to rego too.
Hope that made sense - if not google printing and frisket and see what comes up?

Thanks again. I picked up some MDF and some wood tools and have completed my rough carve. I got the type of MDF with the white primer on one side and am thinking I should both sand that off now and perhaps water seal the board. I often use oil base inks but sometime use water bases too. Can I just spray it with some aerosol finish material? I know there will be more carving to do.

DigReverend In reply to ricmerry [2011-04-04 21:04:41 +0000 UTC]

I hope it goes well, not sure about sealing the board, it shouldn't be neccessary and you need the surface to absorb/hold the ink a bit. I always use water-based so i am not so up on oil-based process anymore. I sometimes use old floooring vinyl instead of lino, I have gotten old rolls from dumpsters. It sometimes has a texture and the vinyl gives a slightly spikier mark but it works well is super durable, free and versatile. I have also bought natural lino floor tiles, which can be obtained cheaper than art lino from any flooring store. Let me know how the MDF goes, it should be good to carve, very consistent.
