Ah wow, look who's talking! You've really got a nice and personal semi-realistic style!

It's embarrassing but I never properly learned how to create any decent digital art (apart from pixel art maybe). You're really skilled.

my man, I am completely envious of your abilities at traditional scenescapes. they are phenomenal, and I mean that. I have been trying to learn landscape drawing for years, but it's so hard and there are so many different new techniques to learn, I always give up!
(and btw your pixel art is   )

For those two older ones, I drew from imagination and was dumb enough to not make use of simple perspective support lines. So those have some issues, but I'm surprised they aren't a lot worse. But I also love architecture, so I guess I had a basic idea of what it should look like. As for the one I uploaded the other day I basically drew what I saw as it's a real place and I'd say you could pull that off assuming you've done portraits of actual people. It really isn't all that different.

Now if you were to try to draw a cityscape from your imagination, don't do what I did back then. Try central/one-point perspective if you haven't already (actually, do it anyway). It may seem intimidating but it's more annoying than it's hard, because really it's quite simple. Two-point perspective can be more confusing, but once you get the hang of that you can draw pretty much anything. But then there's always three-point perspective.
And once again, thanks a lot for your praise! : D

that fact that you can draw something as beautiful as those two pictures from pure imagination is truly impressive dude. When I try drawing any sort of building or scene without a reference, it is an absolute disaster. Even with a reference I'm terrible    I guess that's what happens when you don't practice lol
I find building soooo much harder than people though DX the angles and perspectives like?? how does anyone understand those?? dude you are a different kind of breed

EmblemDefender In reply to sleeping-rainclouds [2018-05-21 19:33:29 +0000 UTC]

Well, do you draw any of these people from imagination? I'd guess so but I don't know. In any case I'm sure certain aspects of every single one of them come from your imagination.

It's all about getting familiar with the subject. I'd of course recommend practicing (only way to get good), but you can learn a lot by just by just observing your surroundings in your every day life. You'll eventually get to undertsand just how things work and are constructed. Whether it's people, trees or buildings.

I happen to live in a place with lots of old beautiful architecture (rather than concrete boxes) and when I walk someplace new (or even the street I live on) I don't just stare at the ground or my phone or store windows, but I look above a lot. Also buildings don't mind you staring at them! xD

You should try just drawing a room using central perspective. That's about the easiest thing you can do. Just look it up, I'm sure you could do it.

I'll definitely start practicing backgrounds! I've been practicing very slowly the last few years, but I always go back to drawing people because I find it more natural and I still have so much to learn just with that.
lol I've definitely got the "concrete boxes" surroundings, but no matter cause I'm a quick internet search from beautiful architecture. ^,^ I'll look into that central perspective too, I've always found that process foreign and complicated but I guess that's the nature of things when you're starting out. Thanks for the advice!

no problem! We all need to start somewhere - and its very inspiring to see someone who isn't afraid to keep trying and continue improving, like yourself! You can only get better, and for a beginner I'm impressed, especially your paintings - traditional art is challenging ;-; Sorry for rambling - also, welcome to dA, and thanks so so so much for the watch!!

I am enjoying the journey (albeit frustrating at times) I can't tell you how many times I have gesso'ed over something and started again or felt like taking a scissor to the whole canvas haha. If being a mother of four has taught me anything, it's take a breath before you react

I know the feeling of wanting to rip the sketchpad in half haha XD But, I've learnt that even the sketches I feel are the worst will show me, in  time, just how much I've improved ^-^ And who knows - maybe your kids will see you drawing and be inspired to start too!

Awesome! Most of the artists I know started out drawing anime style (including me). It's weird that everyone, at least that I've met, seem to discourage learning anime first. I think it's a great way to understand basic facial structure. The exaggeration of the features kinda helps develop a personal style too, I think. Its great that you encourage your kids, though!
