Januari 2019 : I am having a Time-Out period here. Still producing artwork though. See you later !Some years ago I ended my active career as a playworker/social worker.
I was born a painter though. Didn't have much school training. I feel more close to the "Outsiders" art movement.
So, just started publishing here (2016, november). A small representation of paintings spanning more than 40 years (adding current work first).
Maybe find some companions.
Maybe pick up a lot.
I am amazed by the wonderful people here (and Llamas of course), their sublime artwork.

I adore your art
So I'm trying to change that for a while now. Blanc backgrounds are boring on the long term. I'm having a hard time trying, though. I always try to fill my sketchbooks exactly like you do but I never seem to have enough time and they mostly stay incomplete in the end :/ It's very unsatisfying. Can you say how much time one of those sketchbook drawings of you is taking? Are you copying photographs or are you drawing from the moment? To me it seems that you copy most of the human drawings from photos and catching the moments in the cafés with just your eye. That's why I think I like your café drawings even more than the rest ;D They're somehow more vivid!

I'll try to answer your questions. It is true, we seem to have both a lot of patience, although we're not allways satisfied with our results.
Maybe my advantage is : that I am painting/drawing for a few decades by now, so failure is not a problem anymore. It's still a lot of passion and fun, but I don't need to prove anymore.
I am sitting in this coffeehouse (from the drawing), you know, reading my newspaper, sipping coffee, watching my messages, and in between, in periods of 5-10 minutes, I'm progressing my work in my Moleskino or whatever. Next day the same. I'm working on other stuff at the same time. Not too fast.
Friends are passing by. Day after day. And yes, I'm using photographs because when drawing kids, you need to solve the problem they cannot sit quiet for more than 10 minutes.
I think the perseverance to finish good backgrounds, is to have a good reason to draw/paint them. My reason is : fun allright, but more than that : the background has a relation to the subject. In my coffeehouse sketches I've put a funny kid everytime, because the scene would be too boring. And both the kid and the background have to be right or the magic doesn't work ! So there is adrenaline envolved, spontaneously.
(I didn't have a kid in this last sketch... the flowerpot took over). It certainly isnt about reaching perfection in a technical way.
That"s why I'm adoring artists who can survive the temptation to draw perfect realism, and put their soul in their pieces (watch my "favorites" album). Maybe that's what you saw in the café drawings, I feel happy whit those words of praise !
