Thank you kindly for the watch! Currently I am wrapping up last Inktober pieces (late but oh well!) and will embark once again on my Eldritch Horror Atlas project to drive it into completion! Stick around for more creatures and lunatic characters as I slowly but surely build my very own world of PosterraΒ

You're welcome.

The Jaguar CD is working great.Β  I played "Battlemorph" just today.Β  I just killed the Pernitian General that was giving me so much trouble in that game.Β

That's really cool.Β  Where did you learn to fly?Β  The tutorial?Β  Or did a sibling teach you?

up2knowgood In reply to QuebecoisWolf [2017-03-10 02:09:23 +0000 UTC]

Eh, tutorial somewhat, but trial and error mostly.Β  I started to love Atari a few years ago, and have mostly had to learn to play the games myself as this is a HUGE blank spot in my video game experience.Β

I was poking fun at Cybermorph's ludicrous AI.

But on a seriously note, having gotten into retrogames, I've often had the problem of not knowing how the thing works.

up2knowgood In reply to QuebecoisWolf [2017-03-10 03:39:23 +0000 UTC]

I know, but I thought you were asking a serious while doing it.Β

Oh?Β  Having trouble with any particular system, or just figuring out the fine controls?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

QuebecoisWolf In reply to up2knowgood [2017-03-10 17:39:51 +0000 UTC]

Sorry. I was only vaguely serious!

Just in general. If I was going to pick a system, probably the Atari 2600. A lot of 2600 games are pretty complex and not very self-explanatory in the least.

Though if I was going to pick a specific example that once made me throw a controller, it's got to be Terminator 2 for the SNES. It's a bad game with maze-like level design and some glitches that really help the AI (the most dangerous enemies in game are security guards, who due to a glitch, have fully automatic pistols). But the moment of real agony came when I had to actually rescue John Connor. Unlike the movie, this was an epic 45 minute shootout in the arcade between the Terminator and the dreaded alliance of the T-1000, the entire LAPD, and the army of Paul Blart impersonators packing Glock 18s. The arcade was shot to pieces, with every machine destroyed, including the one John was playing (however, neither the explosive destruction of the arcade cabinet nor the thousands of flying bullets nor being stabbed repeatedly in the head by the T-1000 impaired John's enjoyment of his game). Eventually, after being shot and stabbed several dozen times, however, John collapsed, still clutching the joystick.

What I learned after a second playthrough was that John will NOT automatically follow you. You have to go to the pause menu and right under the volume control is "John Follow Y/N." I imagine that might've been in the manual somewhere... maybe.

Yeah, that's always the hard part.Β  You can occasionally find copies or transcripts of the original manuals online.Β  Atari Age has a great selection of manuals for the Atari made systems, and Nintendo Age has some for Nintendo's.Β

I think all gamers have that one game that frustrates them to no end.Β  For me, its Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor.Β  The idea is cool, but the technology just wasn't there to make it work.Β

QuebecoisWolf In reply to up2knowgood [2017-03-12 03:50:31 +0000 UTC]

Usually, yeah... but I'm too cavalier to do that with old games.

I remembering seeing gameplay footage of that game.Β  I can't believe they screwed up such a great idea that badly.
