PERSONALITY

gentle / noble / quiet / weary / bitter / sensitive / clever / envious

Khatar is a lost boy wearing the face of a weary and troubled man; he is tired, he is distant, he is burdened. On his shoulders, he carries the weight of a pack and it brings him down. It makes him hesitate in front of strangers and he has grown to be significantly paranoid of the world around him. He fears that if he gets close to anyone, they will take advantage and bring pain, just like his family brought. The mask he plays into does not fit quite right; he is much more than the survivor, so much more.

There are cracks in his facade where his true self shines through- glimpses of a child unaltered by trauma. Unbecoming of a son raised to be a warrior prince, Khatar is quiet and withdrawn, gentle, even. Never does he speak too loudly or out of turn. He listens well, when he wants to, and he acts with the necessary politeness in every situation. He is a hard wolf to befriend, as there always is a barrier he keeps drawn at all times. He hates to talk about himself; it is a natural defense of being alone, to protect his throat from those that would rather take it by the teeth. It only takes one loose tongue to put one in danger, after all, so he keeps his mouth shut. The idea of opening himself up, showing vulnerability, is one he rejects vehemently.

Despite all the distance he tries to keep between him and others, his gentleness never fails to reach out to others. When he speaks to loved ones, even benevolent strangers, he speaks words of thoughtfulness and understanding. It stems from his own trauma, becoming the figure he would have wanted himself after his loss. A soft touch, a kindly promise. He prides himself on this, rising above where others will not. Stupidly, he will go out of his way to save others from harm because it is the right thing to do, because he wants no one to feel the hurt he has felt. He is a protector of the innocent, a champion of the people.

Yet Khatar still has faults within the cracks.

He has always been a sensitive boy, taking everything to heart. Acts of cruelty never fail to enrage him and his disapproval will never fail to be shown, acting out like a child throwing a tantrum. Temperamental and bitter, he holds great regret from his past, envious of wolves who still have family, who still have a place in the world. Sometimes, he will even deem it unfair- why should those who throw away their family be able to find joy? Why should those that reap havoc on others be able to sleep soundly at night? He would like nothing more than to live back with his pack, and dreams of it at night. Life is cruel that way. Though typically marked by kindness and justice, he can be immature when he is angry towards others, using words to wound them. There is a dark, jealous streak to him, something he longs to bury deep down. Repressing this side rarely works, as it often bubbles over and wreaks havoc upon his relationships. He wonders if he decides to sabotage his own relationships, or if it is an unconscious effort of him to prevent harm. He wants a life where he is happy, but he doubts whether it is even obtainable.

HISTORY

In the steppes of the land, covered in dry grass and ghost fogs, lived the Angarag. They were a nomadic band, a mysterious warrior folk that wandered in with the mist, and out with the shadows. Fiercely protective of their people, they raided others’ kills and territories to survive. For those that knew them, they called them barbarians, plains folk. In reality, the Angarag were a pack steeped in culture, bonded to each other by blood, song and sorrows. Everyone had purpose- be it singer, priest, teacher, hunter- for there was no room for leeches in this clan.

This was Khatar’s pack; he was born the only child of the alpha and his mate. Khan and Hajra kept the child in a cocoon of adoration and protection for the first few weeks of his life. By the time Khatar could walk, his people bowed at his feet, ready and eager to show him the ways of their people. Hajra was a wolf of tenacity and honesty, while Khan was a king who ruled by dedication and wise decisions.

Khatar looked to Khan as a father and leader, wanting to do nothing but to make him proud. Together, Khan taught him to hunt, fish, and to sing. Having very few friends his age, Khatar kept close to his father and his peers. The few friends he did have were all too eager to roughhouse, but Khatar often spoiled the fun when someone got hurt, prioritizing safety over the anger of others. The pups did not like him much, but the adults watched him with a keen eye, eager to see his every move. Empathy like his was a rarity, even to Khan, especially to Hajra. Worry was on her mind; how could a wolf too soft lead his people? Khan did not know how to tell her his son's softness could be a weapon, a strength, because he did not know either.

As spring passed, and the warm haze of summer came, the boy wolf grew out of his pup hood and into a spindly-legged juvenile. The Angarag celebrated the six moon mark with a hunt and dance, their howls a joyous song on the wind. Anxious and excited, Khatar departed into the plains with Khan and the hunters. The next time the pack saw him, he dragged a deer behind him, the fruit of their labor.
They celebrated throughout the night and Khatar's chest swelled seeing his family so proud of him. If this was the life of a prince and a leader, he thought he'd do just fine by his clan.
The rest of the summer days were uneventful, and the pack spent most their days raiding others kills and lazing in the sun. Khatar grew to be well muscled and elegant. In attempts to make his father proud, he tried to use his mind over his heart, often listening to his elders. Life seemed well.

It was with the first snowfall that pleasant life would end.
Khan could be a stubborn wolf and he stuck to his decisions like quills in flesh. He was alpha, and his word was law. When he ran into the remnants of an ally pack, they warned him of the slaughter. They warned him that there would be no mercy from this mysterious Empire, and that the Angarag should flee. Khan laughed. It would be his undoing.
Unlike previous Angarag alphas, the dark wolf often stuck to one territory longer than he should have. He preferred the stability against the word of the elders.

The Empire struck on a winter eve- they fled in from each side, their teeth sharp and ready for the spill of blood. Khatar and Khan arrived at the scene too late; bodies of their pack mates littered the ground, and it was clear the pack came to kill and conquer. No survivors left, none. They threw themselves at Khatar but only scarred his face before Khan peeled them off, and told him to run. Run far, far away. He listened and ran and did not stop for days.

He stopped when the snow no longer lay on the ground, and collapsed. Guilt racked his body with sobs, rage and paranoia gripping him. He remembered the blood, Gods, the blood. He hid himself in grief for a week, his heart too heavy to go forward. Eventually, he realized, he had to survive.
Honing his skills bestowed on him by the Angarag, he managed to keep himself alive by sneaking bites of fallen prey. Cautious of strangers, he kept to himself, not knowing who was foe and who was friend. Maybe it was better that way.
Over the year, he learned to survive, nothing more, nothing less. One day at a time.
