Description three marched away to Civil War,
two brothers and a cousin.
spent many months in Andersonville,
where Yanks died by the dozen.
one brother fell among those dead.
the cousin left his arm,
and came to be my dad's granddad;
they worked a dairy farm.

i lost my dad in '51
when i was only twelve.
they said, "he worked himself to death".
i never knew him well.
two of my brothers have passed away.
they echoed our dad's short life.
the other tells me i'll go to hell;
he's the one who murdered his wife.

his 'faith' is one of the reasons why
i'll be agnostic until i die.

great work! it's so nice to read, and knowing there's truth in it exaggerates that dissonance between wanting to laugh and feeling a bit bad...

i think this could work well even without the last two lines - to me it's sort of obvious. but having them there doesn't take anything away, and maybe it isn't that obvious to others.

thanks for sharing!

actually, Hannale, there's more. my family
has an interesting heritage, more current
than the Civil War, much of it. there's one
very impressive bio on line. i've even
thought about a semi-autobiographical
book, "the Pipers - Pride and Paranoia in
Livingston County, New York", [to be
written by someone who likes to do
research - not me].

thank you.

When you said "pipers", I instantly thought of Cromwell and Cavaliers, in English war. But your murderous brother has no hold on the real, like so many of his spiritual, but not fleshly, kin. If only so many humans were not such fantasising cowards, the rest of us would not suffer so. Cheers to you, friend pip.

No way.

I mess with stuff loads before i submit.

If i start doing it ( except grammar screw up)
I will be messing with it forever.

I might even lose the original message/feel.

I know that too is even a progression if art
In a piece and as an individual but i prefer
to progress in subsequent submitions.

I also get the sneakinh suspicion post editing
To change nuances is addictive.

I have already got enough addictions!

if somebody comments, [or
horror of horrors, even on
a couple of DLDs], if upon
rereading, which i almost
always do, i detect a little
glitch in nuance or rhythm,
i try to fix it.

i shouldn't bother. it's not
like i think about getting
published.

i'm addicted to dA...

Well I guess we all just want
somethings as best as possible.

There are worse things mate
than being addicted to a creative community.

You win.

That IS shit.

I have to say that I have brother.

He is big Christian believer.

In his younger days he was a little preachy, now no more.

He and his wife both have ace senses of humor, we always have a laugh.

They know I believe in aliens more than Gods.

We have a laugh whenever we meet and religion never comes up.

I'm not saying they are models of tolerant to non religious people
and nor am I to religious people.

I am saying religion did not part us.

Its a damn shame that you and your bro don't get along.

I am truly sorry mate.

I wish it was not so.

before he was sentenced, and after
he had been paroled, we spent quite
a lot of time together, for two reasons:
- everyone else had disowned him.
- i needed to understand his motivations.

it took a few years of well spaced visits,
only once while he was locked up, and later
due to the distances involved, but finally,
i suspect his 'religious devotion' is self
serving for the most part, maybe entirely.

so, it does not bother me at all not to see
him anymore. he looks for souls to 'save'
and add to his belt like scalps, to brandish
when he stands before HIS maker. he only
impresses a few of the Christians in and out
of our family, usually not for long before
he scares them away. the murder was in
1976. he's fifteen years older than me.

also, between 1976 and 1984, i lost two
brothers, my mother, my career as an air
traffic controller and my marriage.
despite all that, i functioned in pretty
good order.

since 1984, life has been very acceptable,
actually. so thanks, but i figure i've been
fairly fortunate, Dark, for the natural
optimism and resilience that was given me.

You are tough as shit to keep your own faith after all this.

Im glad you had time to see the roads you both took better
For better or worse.

I think the regret of not doing what you did would have been tricky
To deal with.

Your choices were wise IMO.

small correction - my "faith":
agnostic, slanted toward atheist,
but i don't deny anyone their
beliefs if they need them, just
as long as they keep dogmatism
to a minimum around me. if they
start in on me, i'll show them
that i have limits. no one has
the right to assume they have
all the answers!

if someone has no doubts what-
so-ever, they should keep that
delusional arrogance private.

i suspect you're the same, Dark.

I believe in aliens before Gods.

Id ram that down their throat if they try to force feed me.

See if they can disprove life on other worlds and prove their heavens exist.
