This was THE movie that got me "into" movies. It's the first big epic that I distinctly remember watching as a kid and being incredibly impressed (the other big one at the time, Braveheart, didn't do anything for me) - ten years and multiple rewatches later I still think Gladiator is awesome. I know it's not the most historically accurate of films and it's a bit dramatic and overblown but I LOVE it and I think it is one of Russell Crowe's finest performances. He really elevated the material and made Maximus inspiring, heartbreaking, and badass at the same time. Joaquin Phoenix and Connie Nielsen also shine and RAAA THIS MOVIE.

The Gladiator screenplay faced many rewrites and revisions due to Russell Crowe's script suggestions. Crowe questioned every aspect of the evolving script and strode off the set when he did not get answers. According to a DreamWorks executive, "(Russell Crowe) tried to rewrite the entire script on the spot. You know the big line in the trailer, 'In this life or the next, I will have my vengeance'? At first he absolutely refused to say it." Nicholson, the third and final screenwriter, says Crowe told him, "Your lines are garbage but I'm the greatest actor in the world, and I can make even garbage sound good." (source )
Painted with references on a Cintiq 21UX tablet in Adobe Photoshop. I really wanted to get a sense of movement and a gritty feel down with this portrait.

I like how it's all in tones of red, works as an exaggeration of the light in the scene and fits well with him having just killed several men.
It also happens to look great, makes for good contrast against the bright sky. The detail on the face is great, too.

Damn, you're right. Gladiator is one the best movies made those past 15 years (But, for my part, I include Braveheart to these movies).
Beyond visual appeal and the acting, the music of Hans Zimmer is just phenomenal.

I was wondering how you are able to sell the prints? I know there's some legal issues with selling prints with celebrity likenesses. I'd love to sell some prints of my work but I don' want to get in trouble.

This is another good one. The red ties everything together. I was reminded of the scene before this one where they were led through the wool dying area when he still wasn't sure he would fight. The red awnings make me think of the blood thirsty crowd. The red in his face evokes a sense of emotion.
