Book IV: Target Earth
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jane Smith flew across the skies to confront her destiny. The alien invaders had returned, somehow arriving in her adopted dimension. The statuesque blondes history had finally caught up with her at last, coming full circle. When the creatures had come to her dimension they had come in force, cutting a swath of death and destruction the likes of which the world had never witnessed. She, along with a scant few others, had been the only real defense her world had to offer. Her body was all but invulnerable to their deadly weapons and her strength allowed her to punch through their defenses as if they were made of paper. The anti-gravity flight-harness the US government had created specifically for her gave her the speed and maneuverability to make short work of their incoming fighters and allowed her to punch straight through the larger ships, causing fatal structural collapse. In those days she was called the American Hero, after her father the late Colonel John Smith.
Her father.
That had really been the cause of the problem all along. She loved her father. Loved him as much as any daughter could ever love the man that brought her into this world and kept her safe from its horrors the best he could. He had raised her, trained her, loved her and given her every opportunity and advantage that he never had growing up in the deep South. He was a veteran and a war hero already when he volunteered for the project that gave him the Metahuman abilities he would need as the American Hero. Skills and powers he used to keep America safe for freedom and democracy in the face of Joesf Stalin's Soviet Empire...and her. Olga Yezhov, the Soviet Superwoman. A war hero herself from the Second World War and the most powerful Metahuman on her planet, a title she only gave her grudgingly nowadays. An atheist, warmonger and enforcer of Stalin's will, Yezhov filled the gulags through a road paved with good intentions apparently. Whether she herself was completely oblivious or just too stupid to realize what she was doing, Jane could never say. It was this same naive, symbol of tyranny that took her father away from her forever. Whether it was as she would later claim, that he had committed suicide meant no difference. In the end, Colonel John Smith was dead and a loving daughter was left without a father.
Luckily before he had died, Col. Smith had given his little girl the greatest gift imaginable in her new found body and powers. Powers and strength that rivaled the great Soviet super-weapon. Powers that could have stopped the alien destruction of her world if she hadn't been so blinded by her own rage and grief. All her thought had been so bent upon killing the woman she blamed for the death of her father that when the aliens finally devised a way to send Olga far, far away to this dimension, Jane had willingly gone after her. She had let her own people burn and die under the invaders heel in her quest for revenge. Everything she had ever known and loved was wiped out the moment she followed Olga to this world...and for what? When she arrived here she embarked on campaign after campaign to rid this world of its new communist hero and friend. The Soviet Superwoman was more popular here than she ever was in her own dimension and for every attempt Jane made to show them the truth and the error of their ways she was met with resistance and defeat. She was stripped of her costume, her name and her dignity. She had been imprisoned and branded a criminal and a traitor. She had killed innocent people and their blood still stained her hands. She no longer recognized the woman she had become...and neither would hr father if he was still alive. He would have never approved of the path she had taken. Never approved of the way her had dragged her family name and the name of American Hero through the dirt.
So the American Hero was gone and now only Prodigy remained.
It had been difficult coming to grips with all of it. There were still...friends who believed in her despite everything she had done and all the crimes she had committed: The Crimson Conservative, Idol, American Mom...all of them still had faith in her and in doing so restored her faith in herself. They never even knew the truth of it all. They could never know the whole story...every heinous act she had done in the name of her father and vengeance. Despite all that they had presented her with the opportunity for a clean slate. She could still be the hero her father had always wanted her to become. A champion of justice and a symbol of the American way of life. She knew she still had an uphill battle ahead of her. Outside of a few true friends, most of the world still distrusted or despised her. Even the other heroes of the world questioned her methods and her sincerity. Today she would make up for all that and more. She would drive the aliens screaming back into the stars and make right the wrong she had inflicted on her own dimension so long ago. They would see her then as the person she had always wanted to be, as the hero she always knew was deep inside her.
She had to admit she had mixed emotions learning of the Soviet Superwoman's death shortly after the first mothership was brought down. The news report had found her dead on a rooftop in Paris of all places. She had been killed out of uniform apparently returning from grocery shopping, though why she was on a strange rooftop didn't make any sense. Stabbed through the back with something that pierced her impervious skin and ruptured her heart. Jane had an alibi: she had been taking care of a situation with American Mom at the supposed time of death. Not that anyone had approached or accused her. With the invasion things had been very touch and go and she doubted everyone knew what had even happened yet as it hadn't seemed to have made international news yet. Maybe the French wanted to keep it as secret as possible to keep despair from hitting the ranks of the Guardians and others in a time of crisis? Part of her seriously doubted Ilsa Hauppman, Genocide, was behind it. There was no gloating, no victory in it and the old Nazi bitch would have plastered it all over the news. Olga had been the victim of seemingly mindless, random violence...or that was the way it was meant to appear. Anyone capable of slaying such a foe had to have planned and tracked their prey, taking her off guard at the precise moment before striking. Jane didn't know whether to shake their hand or throw them off a building for cutting down the Soviet Superwoman. In the end her own quest for revenge hadn't mattered at all. It was simply more time she had wasted in her life and would not get back. Time she was going to make up for from here on out.
With a head full of thoughts and self reflection, Jane raced through the clouds towards an invasion ship that had come out of the upper atmosphere above Los Angeles. Sure enough dozens of other motherships had showed up all over the globe shortly after the first one was downed. Other heroes were already making their way towards this new threat, but Jane knew there would still be plenty of fight left in the invaders when she arrived. She could make out the fluttering shape of a cape several yards ahead of her streaking westwards. The most heroes that could bear witness to her savage, selfless attack on this extraterrestrial scum the better. As Jane drew closer she could make out that it was a deep red cape. The woman it was attached too made Jane's jaw drop open.
The Soviet Superwoman, cutting through the skies with a look of sheer determination.
Prodigy pulled up closer and shouted out to her. "You're dead!"
Olga stopped and whipped her head around. Her eyes spied the amazonian blonde and narrowed, even as her hands curled into fists.
"I do not have time for this right now Jane Smith and neither do you! Would you once again sacrifice countless lives in a..."
"Shut up!" Jane snapped, pointing at her. Olga stopped talked, more out of surprise from her tone than anything else. "I mean you were reported dead Olga. Your body was found this morning."
"что...I mean what?"
Jane moved closer so she didn't have to shout quite so loudly at the Soviet juggernaut. "It was all over the French news this morning. Your body was found dead on a rooftop in Paris, killed from behind by and unknown assailant. I saw the pictures, it was definitely you Olga, lying in a pool of heart-blood...or was it?" Jane stopped, looking over her old enemy for some kind of answer.
"I am sure I have no idea, I have not had the time to follow the news of late given the circumstances. I assure you though that I am not dead, no matter how happy it had made you."
Both women had stopped talking, trying to make sense of the news. Olga, trying to understand how she could be dead and Jane how she could be here and alive.
"Perhaps the article made a mistake." Olga said.
"Maybe..." Jane was still rolling everything around.
"We do not have time for this Jane, are you coming to help stop the invaders?"
"Yes." Prodigy replied quietly, yet confidently. Olga nodded her head approvingly.
"Then we had best get there before too many innocent lives are lost. We can discuss this afterwards, da?"
At that Jane nodded. "Fine with me."
Both heroines sped onwards towards the City of Angels. Jane was still confused, but tried her best to put it out of her mind for now. Perhaps it was a ruse by the aliens to demoralize the other defenders? Jane then began to wonder if her own death would make such an impression on the world. Did they really love this Communist, atheist, manish woman so much already that her loss would affect them so profoundly? The woman who had taken her father away from her?
She could feel the old seeds of her hatred for the woman flying next to her begin to grow again, taking root.

It's not so much that Paris news sucks it's just that their anchors do. I mean who's idea was it that Fran Drescher and Gilbert Godfried should read the news?!

You don't see many films in the theatre then do you as it seems so many are like that now. The first one I saw was Avatar.
I am not a huge 3D fan but what is nice now is there is no longer the attempt to point stuff at the audience and sort of say 'look, it's 3D' or to try and ram it down our throat. 3D movies overall seem to be not too different than 2d with just a nice subtle touch of 3d. That way when they do use a cool 3d effect that draws attention to itself it really jumps out at you.

Not really no, I did comment on the image of SS dying that this was a really cheap death and that knowing her creator, she would go out with a bang and not being back stabbed like this.

Fair but not all heroes can go out in a blaze of heroic glory. Also when you consider that SSW was created specifically to be different from the normal heroine such a death could be considered appropriate, ie different, for her.

Huh, well at least she has the self-awareness now to see how far off the reservation she went before... even if Olga seemingly turning out to be alive has her grumbling again.
Speaking of which, that's quite curious, to acknowledge Olga's death and then just have her pop up like that... I guess S-Valkyrie was still gallivanting about in this point in time, so it could have been her instead, but that would seem to conflict a little with how both the Olga showing up here and the Olga that was killed was behaving...
