St. Michael the Archangel

This is St. Michael the Archangel (if you couldn't have guessed that).

I'll need to rescan this, this isn't the greatest picture...

This was one of the first fuller drawings I ever tackled, I did it... several years ago I think. Just pencils. I think I saw a picture of a statue and kind of doodled around the rest of the picture, and made up Satan and this is how it turned out. The eyes are too high on his forehead, the proportions of St. Michael are very grotesque, and I'll redo this... someday soon I hope.

St. Michael, for those interested, is the leader of the heavenly hosts of angels. His name means, in Hebrew "Who is like God?" which is his cry as he casts Satan from the heavens. He's mentioned in a few places in the Bible, perhaps most notably in the book of Revelation. An angel is mentioned in the book of Joshua, that some say is St. Michael, and I think it's a very very cool little quote...

Once when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing before him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went to him and said to him, ‘Are you one of us, or one of our adversaries?’ He replied, ‘Neither; but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.’ And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and he said to him, ‘What do you command your servant, my lord?’ The commander of the army of the Lord said to Joshua, ‘Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy.’ And Joshua did so.

I pray to St. Michael almost everyday, he's a very powerful advocate for spiritual warfare. St. Michael is the guardian of the church, and the angel of the Blessed Sacrament.

All in all, he's a pretty incredible fellow.

Pope Leo XIII composed this prayer to St. Michael. In a vision, he had been shown the fearful battle to be waged between Satan and St. Michael over the Church in the future.

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray and do thou O prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
