I love the sunset behind the church, and the moody sky above. Great pic James

I've been going through and looking at old pics (for the photobook)... when I realized I had so many so different ones of this church, I got the idea that maybe I should do either a calendar or small book of it... and offer it to the church - if they need a fundraiser or something like that... or even if they don't want to sell copies, it might make a good gift for the pastor or something..

I've made a few calendars myself, quite expensive. I wait for Office Max to have a special because when they do it only cost like ten bucks to get one made.

If you go to [link] you can order calendars.. pretty good quality - not quite as good as dA - but for the price difference (around $11.50 vs. $15 or so if I remember right on dA IF you have a prints account), you can still offer the calendar for sale (if the base price is 11.50 that's what you would pay but someone else would pay whatever you marked up... ) the idea is that you can buy for yourself or as a gift for $11.50 or whatever, but sell them for $15 or $20 or whatever, and you keep most of the difference.

Anyhow, I was thinking about either doing that or blurb.com has photobooks for a decent price - similar terms...

Thank you! Obviously it's one of my favorite subjects... This is a photo that I never posted way back when but when I look at it now I think.. Love the fact that there's enough light to show the green of the grass yet not bleach out the sky... It's kinda tough to strike that balance sometimes at sunset.

I totally agree. One day I'm getting a ND filter for that. You're welcome.

Me, too, but I'll wait till I get a grown-up camera for that...

My Sony is pretty good but it doesn't inspire me to work very much. The old 4mp Olympus took higher-quality shots than this 8MP. If I can afford to before this year's over I'll have some form of D-SLR camera... And then the real fun starts (lens collecting... )

Lens collecting is fun..... I love it. I'm thinking about getting another camera body too.

So far, I've got an older/cheaper Minolta SLR and two lenses... If I got to some other vendor (Sony's alpha series is the new "Minolta") I won't lose too much of an investment. Not dogging Sony but after this current camera, I may steer clear of them for the higher-end equipment. Nikon, Pentax, Canon all have good cameras... My Olympus point-and-shoot made awesome photos - like the above, so if the price is right, I'd consider that, too...

Gotta while to go before I jump into it though.

I'm really happy with my alpha 100. I'm considering an alpha 700 when the tax refund comes.

And I have a friend who just bought a 100... I know they're supposed to be great... They (Sony) just came out with a 200 that is an almost 1-for-1 replacement for the 100 - very minor changes..

I guess I was just really disappointed with the one I got and it turned me sour a bit - in the end it'll depend on the performance I get for the money... the one I got is a Sony DSC H7, an 8.1MP 15x Optical Zoom, with some awesome features, and mediocre image quality.

The last bit comes from the fact that there are no quality setting options... Every photo is a very compressed jpg file... so I end up averaging about 2MB per image whereas my Olympus 4.1MP turned out 2.6MB files... double the MP into a smaller amount of space, and what you see at 100% view is a lot of distortion around the edges...

I had hoped that Sony would issue a firmware update that improved the image quality but so far nada...

But your score counts 2 on the friend's list who have the Alpha in hand and really like it! So that might push me that direction.

I was considering the 200, but it only comes in a kit and all I need is another body.
I also have a Pentax K110D that has given good service.

From what I've read the 200 is almost the same as a 100... the 700 is the real upgrade - and much more expensive. I have read a lot of good things about Pentax, too... My brother used to have a huge SLR Pentax case with lots of lenses when he was in the navy years ago but I think someone stole a bunch of his things when he was at sea one time...

There was an article in Pop Photography a couple months ago by a guy who has been a Pentax guy for years and years... His analysis was that the camera doesn't matter so much - his investment over the years was the lenses... Many years ago he went with Pentax because he could get a certain type of fisheye lens for Pentax only...

And now, those film SLR's carried him for years, and he's on his 2nd D-SLR but the camera is the disposable part.... the lenses he bought 20 years ago are still compatible and still going strong.. if anything because of the processing power of the digital cameras, the effective power of the zooms is even more than they were when he bought them for use with the film camera.

I thought it was an interesting take... I might "settle" for a lower-end D-SLR up front (although probably at least that a100's 10.1 MP).. and in a couple years when newer ones are cheaper I can upgrade - in the meantime the fun part will be finding some good lenses without paying a fortune.

Yeah, I've been looking for awhile..

I think I read that article. The lenses are the key. There really isn't much difference between the photo quality I get from the a100 or the k110. The a100 has more pixels and a few more functions available. The pentax has easier controls.
I'll stick with the sony brand because that is where I have my largest lens investment.

and for me, I simply have the minolta kit lens and a 70-200 zoom... it's a start, but if I could find the right system at the right price, I could still do something different...

I value your thoughts though, and my perception of the Alpha has improved already.. thanks for sharing!
