Oh you can beat robots with melee weapons. They just need to be laser, plasma, magic, or super heated based. Just using regular will see it bent, chipped, scratched, or out right broken against a robotic opponent.

Its a weird world and there are some things possible there with unknown nature. So its totally possible as far as I know
