Description This is the second map I illustrated for a fantasy book series, the first one depicting the whole world and this one a smaller region in much greater detail. Of course here I can only display a smaller version of the map, but the full version is quite huge as it will be used as a poster for promotional purposes and a simplified version of this will be used in the books themselves.

This was much more work than the first map to which I will link to, because this one contained much more land and therefore much, much more line work and shading to do, I was really kinda surprised myself how much of it there was. Well, it's my own fault, I sketched the thing and decided how detailed it should be in the first place.

The previous map and some more work I did for the same project:

This is incredible!

What program did you use to create this masterpiece?

Thanks. Corel Painter, but photoshop or something similar would have worked just as well in this case

Wow! It's awsome! how long do you take to make such a detailed map?

AugustinasRaginskis In reply to Grosbluff [2017-02-03 18:58:30 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Almost two weeks of pure work, so probably around 70 hours or so. The linework was the main time sink, it alone took at least half of the whole process

Damn that's one big work project! But that doesn't surprise me when i see the huge amount of detail you did on it ^^
And it shows that you had fun with it

Yeah, I did. I thought it might get boring after a time, but surprisingly it didn't. Except for the text part, but luckily this map had very little text. I also listen to a lot of podcasts when I work on simpler parts that allow for some distraction

Yeah i do that too, but with some youtube video of other artist, it somehow made me more focus for long works ^^

I love fantasy maps and this is so pretty and detailed! I bet that this doesn't even show its whole beauty as well as the huge version but still it's so cool.

Thanks. I would like to upload a larger version, but you know, need to make it somewhat hard to steel, it's client work after all.

TomaFenae [2017-02-02 17:45:22 +0000 UTC]

Very nice. Would you ever be up to map commissions in the future? Like, if we provided a rough map, could you create a more detailed version?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AugustinasRaginskis In reply to TomaFenae [2017-02-02 18:40:51 +0000 UTC]

Yes, if the price is decent. That's the way I did this map. I received a very simple basic sketch and I drew a much more detailed and polished version of it. Of course the first map only has to have the most important landmarks marked, I made up the rest and make it look good.

Cool, I have a friend who has been constructing a custom world setting, and he has been having a hard time with map making software. I suggested working with an artist to get a commission, and he seemed receptive. Then you uploaded this piece, and felt it was the perfect time to ask.

If he ever decides to go through with it, i will make sure to send him your way!
