Really glad you found it useful.

I don't have access to PS7. Hopefully there's a Brush palette with options for setting the thickness of the paint stroke? Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I love lock transparent pixels! If they were food, they would be cookies. And I would eat them all.

Although I have a question...
If you don't want to paint on the same layer all the time, does the transparent pixels work anyway?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BikerScout In reply to TheSatanicNun [2011-07-31 17:44:07 +0000 UTC]

If you lock the pixels on a layer, it will only affect that layer. Every layer has it's own Lock Pixels' icon so you'll need to set each one separately.

First I have to say I really admire the great work you've been doing, it's beautiful. You're very talented. I'm a little bit disssapointed though, I didn't know you "draw through", I mean sketching on reference photos. Do you always do it? Don't you consider it as cheating?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BikerScout In reply to SDDLT [2008-12-14 23:14:22 +0000 UTC]

You know, I spent so long (15 years or so) working with pencil and not gridding or tracing or using any kind of 'cheat' that I feel I owe myself a break.

I don't see it as cheating. The sketch stage takes 10 minutes. The rest of the piece... the actual painting... the details... the real work... the observational stuff... getting colours balanced right... lighting... can take up to 20 hours or more. You can't trace colours.

I've spent years working with traditional media getting likenesses right. Now that I'm working digitally, I'm concentrating on developing other elements. Once I'm comfortable working with digital media, then I'll combine the two practices.

If that initial 10 minutes helps make it a little bit easier and takes away the stress of getting the likeness, it works for me.

Very good tutorial.Especially the part about colouring....

I'm always having problems when colouring...
I just can't figure out how to do it
I choose the base color, and the shading colors (lighter/darker then the base color, for the shadows/highlights)...but it looks un-natural.It's too big the diference between one and the other
Is there something that I do wrong?Or...?

Thank you!

BikerScout In reply to ImaginaryRosseArt [2007-12-26 22:04:55 +0000 UTC]

Glad you found these tips useful. I guess having success with picking colours depends on a variety of things.

If you're working from a photograph, look carefully for subtle colours that are different to skin colours. In my Carlzon portrait , there are blues, pinks and even greens in there. Loosen your colouring style and try a slightly more impressionist approach - you might surprise yourself! Using colours that you think won't work, may well turn the piece round for you and give you the edge that you want.

If on the other hand you're creating your own character, think about using multiple light sources. Using 'spill light' can add a dynamic edge to your work. Check out my ongoing series of '24' portraits to see examples of this technique. Selectively saturating areas of 'boring' skin can have a great effect too. You can see this in my Megan Ewing piece.

Don't be too hard on yourself too soon though. It can often take a while before a portrait begins to take shape as you want it to. Keep working away at it and try experimenting. Save often (Ctrl + S is the keyboard shortcut) and it won't matter if you make huge mistakes.

Thank you for the help!!

Well,I guess it's just a matter of time...

It's so different from the traditional painting/drawing.
I have my tablet for 2 years now,and I'm still trying to find a good way to match the colores....to blend them ...

And I've searched for tutorials...Nothing about blending/shading...

Thanks for the tips. I'm also just getting into digital paintings and is looking for all the help I can get. I've ordered for Photoshop but currently use Fireworks8 after upgrading from Mx.
Can I use Fireworks to paint as well as thatΒΏ
I'd like to learn some stuff as well for Fireworks, before the Photoshop arrives.
