wait, what program is this for?
would it work for gimp?

I paint with PhotoShop. I've never used the Gimp before so I don't know if the same options are available - sorry.

I use Gimp all the time. I've found its tools to be almost identical to PhotoShop for the most part, so I don't see why this technique wouldn't work. The only problem is Gimp does not have any brushes like the ones in this tutorial. So you would have to work around that.

i would really like to try the multiple window tip but I can't find the option under my "window" tab....I think it's cause I have Photoshop 7.

So, do you know another way of getting same result?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BikerScout In reply to magikwolf [2009-07-11 07:47:48 +0000 UTC]

I use CS2 and don't have a copy of PS7 to hand I'm afraid so not sure if there's another way of producing the same effect. Sorry.

this is a great tutorial! It's going to help heaps I just have one question - what kind of tablet do you use? I only have a wacom bamboo fun, and I tend to find with my older, lesser quality tablet (graphire 3) I needed to make the images bigger to add in lots of detail, as the brush strokes are not as 'fine'. Anyway, thanks so much for sharing!

BikerScout In reply to mondeis [2009-05-05 12:21:50 +0000 UTC]

Glad you found it so useful!

I use an Intuos3 but to be honest the techniques in this tutorial should work even on the most basic model tablet. It sounds as though you're referring to resolution. I generally always work on an 8" x 10" canvas at 300dpi - you can input these values when you start a new document in Photoshop. This should be more than enough to squeeze in all those awesome details.

Having said that, I got lazy on the Clint Eastwood piece and only worked at 150dpi but the detail still comes through.

mondeis In reply to BikerScout [2009-05-06 00:41:38 +0000 UTC]

The resolution does play a big part (I always use 300dpi), but I know that tablets also affect the quality of the piece, even only slightly. With my old graphire 3, I had to use a canvas of about 3000 pixels to create something of the same detail as a 1500 pixel piece with my bamboo fun. It was just the sensitivity I think, and the sharpness of the brush strokes. Sorry I'm not making much sense I'm not saying a lesser quality tablet is useless, my graphire 3 served me well for many years ^^
Your tutorial has completely changed the way I do my art, seriously. I never thought of splitting up the screens (let's just say it's the most helpful thing ever lol). And I always had the problem of my people coming out too smooth, so now I paint with the spatter brushes and it makes all the difference You are a lifesaver, thanks again!!!

There are screenshots in the tutorial that show you which brush I use but you can use even the most basic round brush and with some adjustment to spacing & scatter produce similar effects.

Thank you. Spatter is the key.
I don't want to download textures because then the painting is not completely mine i want to make my own.

This is fine for skin I'm currently looking for some tutorial on doing metal textures and grass.

Great tutorial! You hae definately taught me some thing new as far as the windows in Photoshop goes. That is pretty cool! I just tried it, and I am pretty happy with it.. LOL I think I'll be working this way from now on if I can just remember how to set it up each time I want to work with a reference photo.

Again thanks!

Goodday.
