I'd love this so much more if that was actually Santa rather than Dumbledore.Β I can't imagine Snape being comfortable with the knowledge that Dumbles can get in and out his room while he's totally unaware.Β (And with Santa, it would show that someone else actually cares.)

Dumbledore: one of few to see and reward the good in Severus.

Up to a point... Dumbledore also coerced Snape to work for him through his guilt for Lily's murder, forced him again into his role as a spy, denied him information such as the Horcrux existence (and hunt) and the fact that Harry ought to die because of them. How did he reward the good in him, exactly? Making him his executioner?

Dumbledore never really coerced anyone into anything--it was Snape's own decision to continue on for Lily's sake; he could've left and no one would've tried to stop him. But he did see the logic behind Dumbledore's words: if he didn't protect her son, it would be selfish and evidence that he didn't love her when it counted (and he already made that mistake once). Dumbledore also put himself at Snape's mercy to end his life humanely, trusting him not to let the Death Eaters get to him first. He also kept information from Snape in the off-chance Voldemort entered his mind. Occlumency is powerful, but that kind of risk just couldn't be taken. It was also Harry's decision in the end to die or run. And of course he chose the latter. Snape and Harry's actions were those of their character, not an outside party's manipulation. Snape did everything he did because of his love for Lily. Harry did it because he knew he was the only one who could. And if they didn't, Voldemort would win and the everything they fought for or cared about would be lost.
I agree, Dumbledore isn't perfect: I still have some issues with him disapproving of the Marauder's bullying of Snape, but "loving them too much" to stop it. But any ounce of power he had since that day in Godric's Hollow was given to him, not acquired. He chose to be a school teacher on purpose, making sure children like his sister could receive the care they deserved. He had to be summoned to most Ministry hearings, and only came uninvited with students/facuty's well-being was at stake. What did he have to gain manipulating people beyond the grave? It's not like he could gloat in heaven. And if Dumbledore wanted to be great, he could've easily been Minister of Magic for as long as he pleased--or better yet, joined Gellert despite the death of his sister, or years later when her death had worn off (which it never did).
So yes, in spite of his faults, Dumbledore remains kind, tactful, and above all merciful. JK herself calls him the epitome of good, and I agree.
