I used the pen tool in Photoshop. It takes a little longer but I like the precision

It wasn't designed to. For the most part, the weapons on the back are the only things that really change shape in that they fold away

I'd love to colour both versions but my style/technique takes so long at times and so I'm not sure if I'll get the chance. I'm going to start with ver 1 I think and we'll see what happens from there. The advantage here is at least I know the direction I want to take so I can avoid hours of experimenting (I hope)
