As much as Jarin  would love to participate, he understood the importance of observation too. It started from their very first lessons together, seeing how he should properly halter a horse - it didn’t go around their legs… And it had blossomed into seeing how to ride like a pro. Jarin could watch a novice like himself on video and then watch someone like Tristan , who had been riding since childhood at high levels, and see what a vast difference there was between them. He didn’t always see the difference at first, but after so many lessons with Tristan, he was starting to understand the little nuances that made the difference.

“That! I want to see more of that from you, Jarin.” Tristan called out to Jarin in their lesson. “That’s the kind of riding I want to see from a dressage rider, and that’s the kind of power I want to see from the horse. Go down the diagonal now, past me, and try and get the same level of power out of him. He wants to look like he’s striding out, almost floating over the sand. Get lots of lift out of him with collection!” He was honestly shocked to see Jarin get it right first time around… now to prove that it wasn’t a fluke, which Tristan was somewhat more doubtful of...

Jarin smiled to himself, watching Tristan and Shifty  take the dressage ring and salute. What a magnificent pair. Shifty was such an awesome mount, so powerful and athletic. Tristan knew how to tap into that and push that excellence from every stride. Amazing how such a large animal could look so weightless as they trotted into their pattern.

Tristan watched as Jarin rode past, granted, it had taken quite a bit longer this time, he was certainly of the opinion that the last attempt at this had definitely been a fluke, but hey, this was better than nothing. “I want to see him step off into that the very moment that you request it from him. You can’t afford to be halfway down the diagonal before you start doing the movement you were meant to be doing from the beginning of it. Everything should be exact, clean, and precise. Remember, it’s an art form. Dressage is like a dance. And the best dancers make sure their movements are exactly the same every time they do it. They are neat and clean. I expect the same of you.” He stated firmly, watching them both. “So, again! Down the left-hand side now.”

Shifty carried himself down the rail, flicking his legs forward like he was passing through water, so fluid and smooth. Tristan seemed to do nothing at all and yet he was the sole leader of the whole operation. One misplaced cue on his part and the whole thing would come apart. Jarin wondered just how many times he and Shifty practiced these movements. Tristan rode every day, several horses, for long hours at a time. By the time Jarin rode his horses and finished his chores, he still had time to sit and watch Tristan ride into the night. That’s what it meant to take his riding serious. No slacking off and no excuses. Jarin sighed, swooning over the lead changes, so simple, so striking and beautiful. An art form in motion.

“I’m stubborn, and easily anxious, and a workaholic amongst other things,” Tristan admitted. He wasn’t perfect by any means. Jarin saw him through some kind of lens that didn’t show a single fault in Tristan’s being. Surely he could understand that no one was actually perfect.
Jarin cocked his head to the side, furrowing his brow a little at Tristan’s “faults”. He didn’t understand them as Tristan did. “ I just don’t understand it like you do. You said those were faults? Like something bad? But…the way I see it… you're stubborn because you know what you want. Why should you settle for anything else? You get anxious because you know it can be better and there’s nothing wrong with wanting something to be better. And…I think you find comfort in working like I find comfort in riding. I don’t…I just don’t see them as faults. It’s just who you are…”
Tristan gave a wry smile. Jarin just wouldn’t give it up, would he?  “And that would be the case, for example, with my work, if I wasn’t quite so neurotic with it. Most traits can be good in a small amount, Jarin. But the problem is when there is too much of one thing. My stubbornness was part of the issue and combined with my tendency to overwork…” he trailed off for a moment. “It meant that I was rarely ever present which frustrated both myself and...well, ex-fiance.”
“Now, don’t get me wrong,” Tristan continued, “that wasn’t the only issue going on there. But, I hope you understand my point. There isn’t anything wrong with wanting something to be better, but to achieve the impossible, that’s often what I aim for, and it’s just that. Impossible. I don’t push that onto you quite so much as I do myself, to the degree where I may lose sleep over it, amongst many other reasons that I don’t get sleep. Which turns a simple perfectionist trait into a fault.” He was trying his best to explain it to Jarin without confusing him, but it wasn’t easy.
“I-I used to think you were impossible, Tristan!” Jarin stared back at him, deeply invested into every fiber of Tristan’s being, whether he thought they were faults or not.
Tristan was somewhere between a heartfelt smile and a snort of laughter. He could hardly believe Jarin some days. So naïve. So beautifully, amazingly, adorably naïve. He could barely get past it. “I’m not impossible, Jarin.” He stated honestly, leaning in to peck his lips lightly. “I’m only human, after all.” He pointed out, giving him an affectionate look, he wrapped his arms around Jarin in turn. “And trust me, Jarin, I’d never try to push you for something that I didn’t think you could achieve.”

It tended to be on himself as a rider that he was the cruelest. Jarin didn’t get to see it quite so much, for the sheer fact that Tristan had become more skilled. But he was his own greatest critic, particularly as a dressage rider. Constantly pushing for more, bigger, wider, more expressive as Shifty hoisted himself into each stride, reaching with every stride. Each movement had to be exact, clean-cut, beautiful. Impossible. And yet he still strove for it, lost sleep over it, contemplated it some more, pushed, grew frustrated, and yet still pushed more to the degree where he became obsessive until he reached that impossibility or died trying. His stubbornness - his perfectionist nature, wouldn’t let him get away with anything less. But he would never push such strain onto Jarin. Never.

tldr;
--Jarin humbly admiring Tristan (he's obsessed with Tristan, okay?)
--Jarin reflecting on the dressage lessons with Tristan and seeing how he applies them to the ring
--Tristan explains his faults
--Jarin doesn't see them as faults; just who Tristan is
--That's nice <3
--Tristan might be stupid hard on himself but he wouldn't want to do that to Jarin <''3

Huuzzaah~ This has been ready for a while xD Well, it was ready for me to put the finishing touches to it and throw it up but deadline extensions tend to deflate my tires lol So I figured it was time to get this wrapped up! Been a while since I did this kind of detailed style <3 My wheelhouse right here. Loooooved taking the time and just fleshing out all the foliage and flowers (I just bought a bunch of flowers today. I looove flowers <333) Truly adored the theme of this show

I owed Tristan some nice art for making him ride with Jarin a while ago xD Tristan is supposed to be a strict fancy man - not farting around with a dweeb lmao So we're even now Until the next time I need to torture him with Jarin antics lololololol

A peek at how Jarin and Tristan's lessons go too! I have a lot of writing for them but I don't wanna keep drawing training images with the same ol' riding lessons lol So I skip over a lot of it but Jarin does get A LOT of lessons on the daily xD And Tristan has to survive Jarin being Jarin A LOT. This was a nice break for Tristan to take his very nice horse to a very nice show <3
