“You brought some of my horses?” Tequila  asked, looking into the paddocks of Pemberley where he had released them. Some of her favorites too! They were just as flashy and pretty and full of ife as she left them. It wasn’t like she had completely forgotten about them. She was just preoccupied with growing a human inside of her. And making sweet love to her fiancé.
“Yea,” Justin admitted with a smile, rubbing a hand behind his neck. “Can’t take the cowgirl outta you, lil’ mama. No matter how much lace and silver he puts on ya.”
Tequila smiled, leaning against the stall door, “Well, thanks baby. You gonna bring the rest for me too?”
“If ya want me to,” he was quick to volunteer. Nervous, maybe. “Or-” he just as quickly jumped back on his plan, “Or, I could load ‘em all back up and you could hitch a ride with me back to Texas. It’s cold as shit up here.”
Tequila wrapped her arms around herself, agreeing with his fact, “Oh my God, it’s so fuckin’ cold. My tits are like rocks!”
Justin covered his chest with his hands, “Mine too!” They both laughed but the laughs faded. Justin stared at the ground for a moment too long because when he looked up again Tequila had an expression of pity. “QuiQui…” he had to do it. This was the last chance ever. “He ain’t a good guy.”
Tequila sighed and shifted her weight, “Jus-”
“He’s a liar. He lies to everyone around him to get what he wants. And if the lyin’ ain’t workin’, he just manipulates you or has someone do the dirty work. He ain’t an honest man, QuiQui. He’s gonna get you hurt. He ain’t right for you and he ain’t gonna be an honest father.” Justin laid out his case. He didn’t know if Tequila knew about Georgie  and the 20 years of lying he fucked her over with. “He had a chance at bein’ a father before, QuiQui. Did he ever tell you that or is he still lyin’ ‘bout that too? He never even told his own kid-”
    “Jus-”
“He hid it from everyone!” Justin was getting angry all over again. The lies and hiding Georgie like she was some kind of mutant. “Treated her like she didn’t exist! You want that kind of man-”
“Justin!” Tequila interjected to cut him off. “I already know. I already know about Georgie. He told me.”
Silence took over the air for a moment. So she knew? And she still wanted to be with him? “When? When it was convenient for him? Did he try to sugarcoat his bullshit? He abandoned her, Tequila! What if he does the same to you? To Nick?”
“He didn’t abandon her, Jus. He told me everything. About Ana, about Georgie, about his dickhead father, about the car accident that was supposed to…I dunno, maybe kill them both… I don’t know. He told me everything. And I was fucking pissed off. I let his ass stew in the shit he stirred.” Tequila rubbed her arm, not because she was cold, but because she was stroking the anger out of herself before she got heated too. “I’m passed it.”
“Passed it?” Justin was leveled once again. How could she just… “Yer just…forgivin’ him?”
“Fuck no,” Tequila stamped. “He fucked up. We’ve all fucked up before. You don’t hate me for havin’ miscarriages-”
    “That ain’t the same-”
“Sleepin’ with more men than any of us know how to count to-”
“Well- I-” Well, he probably had just as many women on his list as she had men. Maybe. Tequila did like her threesomes…foursomes…orgies… did those count…
“ Will  wants to be a good daddy. I want him to be a good daddy. And I want to be a good mama. Don’t you think Georgie deserves a good mama too? Why can’t she have one for once in her life?”
Justin sighed, slumping against the stall and staring at her deeply. She looked so beautiful even standing in a barn, mad, upset, determined, stubborn. “Qui… I don’t think Georgie’s lookin’ for a mama…”
Tequila shrugged, “How do you know? How does she know? She’s never had one to know.” She let that sit with him for a moment. “I don’t want that for Nick. He is going to have a daddy and he is going to have a mama. And with Will, I can promise him both. I owe that to my baby.”
“I love Will. He’s been nothin’ but sweet to me from the very start. He gives me anything I want and he’ll do anything to make it happen. He wants me happy and he wants a real opportunity to be the father he never got to be. That might not be the Will you know, but that’s the Will that loves me.” She watched him hang his head. She knew Justin really liked her. He had for so many years. Since the day he stammered onto their family ranch, looking for a job to support his mother. He always admired her and worshipped the ground she walked on.
Justin couldn’t lift his head. The crushing reality dragged his spirits down, “And yer gonna marry him?” He didn’t get an answer. Instead, he heard her shuffle closer to him, putting a hand on his arm. He opened his eyes and saw the massive ring on her finger. Something so pretty looking so painful, constricting, permanent…
“Daddy already said he could. He proposed right on the front porch in front of Mama and my brothers. I’ve just gotta pick a date.” It was hard to mask her joy even though she knew it was probably killing Justin. But he had to have a wake-up call. They weren’t thirteen anymore.
But Justin’s heart was still stuck as that little boy just discovering the magic of boobs. He never grew up and he just didn’t understand why- “QuiQui, this is forever.” He took her hand in his, “You can still change yer mind-”
“I won’t- Justin! Stop.” She tugged on him as he started to sink to one knee. “Stop!” She knew what he was trying to do. She grabbed him by his arms and pulled him back up, pulling him into a hug instead. “That ain’t gonna change anything. Don’t you say any of that to me.”
Justin held her firm, trying to blink back his tears, but the little boy couldn’t be consoled. “QuiQui, please. Please don’t. I can be a better man- Why can’t I be your man? What’s wrong with me?”
Tequila shushed him, stroking his back. Poor baby. She did feel genuine sympathy for him. It was hard getting a heart broken. She tried so hard for so long to let him down gently. But Justin never did want to give up on people. “I ain’t for you, Jus,” she spoke softly. “I love you, sweet boy, I do. Yer always sweet to me too. Always lookin’ out for me. Takin’ care of me no matter what. Will’s gonna take care of me now, okay? I know, I know,” she consoled him, rocking gently. She didn’t think any less of him for crying. He was always strong for so long. It was okay if he needed a woman’s embrace to soften him.
“I promise, Jus. I will be safe. He’s gonna take care of me and Nick. I’m gonna teach him how to take care of Georgie. We’re going to be a really good family, baby. I want this. I want this so much.” Tequila felt herself tearing up. This kind of feeling was new to her too. She had never been this deeply infatuated with one person. She always thought she was going to struggle giving up her avid sex life and always wanting someone richer, prettier, sexier, etc. But she didn’t feel any of that with Will. She wanted him for who he was. Mistakes and all.
“Can you let me have this?” She strained to ask. “Jus,” she stepped back, wiping his cheeks as he wiped hers. “You need to let me have my happiness.”
Justin really sucked it up, trying hard to pull himself together. Happiness. Where was any joy for him in this? His heart sank to the depths as he understood the bigger picture here. It wasn’t about him. He wasn’t a part of the picture. It was time he stopped trying to glue himself into it. He finally managed a nod. “I swear by God, QuiQui, if he ever does anything to fuck this up…”
Tequila smiled, hugging him again, “You’ll be the second to find out when I call you to come help me bury a body.”
    “Amen.”
