Chris snugged up the noseband after swapping bridles on Jax . They were just about done with the "pretty" phases of the event. He'd have to pull him out of this phase, tack him, and get him into the warmup area ASAP if he was going to have any chance of having something to work with. Surely, by then, this horse would have his senses about him.
Kate leaned on the rail to watch the class. She admired the quality of horses in this event. It was kind of a big deal. So, for the most part, if she wasn’t helping to run things smoothly for Chris, she stayed back out of the way. She made sure not to wish Chris any luck. He wouldn’t like that. She smiled to herself, glancing across the arena and seeing his dad, Dave , bunched up in the stands looking miffed. He could see where the family got their looks from. A resting scowl almost.
She didn’t like feeling like she was a problem between them so she summed up her courage and walked over to him. She didn’t know if this would be a good idea or not but it felt childish to ignore him. She sat down beside Dave and smiled.

Okay, now she felt awkward. She opened her mouth, pondering what to say. Hi? She should have thought about this beforehand!

Just go for it, Kate! “Hi, Mr. Burton.” It would be weird to call him Dave, right? Or was she old enough to drop the formalities? Well, Chris said he was old-school so perhaps it was appropriate.
Dave visibly jumped! He had been so deep in his own thoughts, he hadn’t seen her sit down right next to him. His jump made her jump and they both stared at each other with bewildered looks. “Ah, Ms. Smith, I hope you haven’t been there long, my apologies.”
Kate waved off the apology, “No, no, I just stopped by. Thought I could sit with you until this phase of the show is over. My services aren’t needed until then,” she chuckled.
Dave lowered his hands to his lap. He wasn’t sure what to think about her coming to him. Bold or childish? Perhaps she was still naive enough she needed to be around an adult. Or perhaps she was brave and didn’t fear Dave’s presence while she trounced around his son. He’d have to find out. In the Davest way possible. “I do hope he’s not mistreating your services, Ms. Smith.” What services?
“Up to my elbows in rags and soap with his horse,” she smiled. “For such a nice horse, he sure does make a mess out of himself!”
“And those around him,” Dave returned with a polite smile. They shared a little chuckle but Dave wasn’t falling for it.
Kate turned her attention to the ring, “There he is. What a handsome boy, the, uhm, horse,” she clarified gently so she didn’t freak out the poor guy. She could poke and tease around Chris but Dave didn’t seem the type to get the joke. She was testing the waters, seeing as Chris was stuck around him for some time. She might as well make friends, not enemies.
Dave’s eyes shifted from Chris leading Jax in and followed the stud next. “I believe that is to be determined by those that seek it.” It was a nice way of saying ‘well, that’s your opinion.’ “You seem fond of the horse, Ms. Smith. Not many can say the same thing if they had long enough to know him.” How long have you been seeing my son?
Kate shrugged, “I don’t think he’s so bad. Chris has been working with him a lot this year. I think he’s come a little ways from then.”
Aha, so a year then.
Jax was fired up and ready to frolic in the arena! Chris paused a moment, making the stud actually stand still while he unclipped the lead and pulled it from the rings of the bit. “Don’t be an idiot, please.” He set the stud loose, gesturing with a hand for him to motor on. It didn’t take much enthusiasm for Jax. A couple wary steps from Chris and he knew he was off the lead! Away, he romped into the open half of the arena with a snort and a buck.
Kate covered her smile, leaning a little closer to Dave, “Okay, he still has his moments, but he’s young.”
Dave only smiled to be polite. He wasn’t amused by a grown horse behaving like a silly foal. Instead, he kept an eye on Chris to see what he’d do to regain his horse’s senses. “One can only hope that’s his excuse.” For both Jax and Chris. “Be wary, Ms. Smith, if you fancy the horse too much, he may land in your pockets. By the sounds of it, maybe that wouldn’t be so undesirable, hm?” Dave kept it light and almost joking. But what he was really asking was are you after Chris for his fortunes? He had access to nice horses, was in a wealthy family, had a blossoming career… he had to protect his son from gold digging harpies.
It took everything in Kate not to snort and laugh at the notion. She giggled and shook her head, containing herself as best she could, “Oh no! I couldn’t ever handle that horse. He’s way too much for me. I’m a decent rider but I don’t think I’m destined to get up to the level he and Chris are going for. I’m afraid I’d be quite the waste of a rider for a horse like Jax.”
Dave picked that apart in his brain, watching the greying stud flaunt himself in the ring. He floated from one end to the other in an airy trot, springing along with life and energy. With a fan of the whip or even just a thought of it, he rolled into a canter; nimble but powerful. Another smile to the crowd as Jax was sure he had the scent of a mare somewhere. It was all in his head but what else was a stud supposed to think of in an empty ring with no fun jumps for him to conquer?
What Dave gathered from Kate was that she wasn’t pursuing a grounded career in the competitive market of show horses. Not one that would come easily without other means to support herself. “Circumstances can always change, Ms. Smith,” he said, perfectly pleasant. “For better or worse; I’m afraid we don’t have those answers until they land in our laps.” Have you thought any of this relationship through with my son? Is this just a spontaneous youthful fling that will amount to nothing but heartbreak in the end?
Kate really wasn’t sure what Dave was referring to anymore. Did he mean Jax? Like if he got hurt or something? Or did he mean Chris? Maybe he knew more about what Chris’s plans were for the future, being his dad and all. Or did he mean about her and what she was doing? Honestly, she had no idea what she was supposed to make of the remark. She turned her attention to the ring where Chris was getting Jax caught again in a side chute so they could have the next horse come in.
“Ah, looks like I’m about to have more drool land in my lap for now,” she chuckled, getting up and brushing off her confusion. “And I don’t think that’s so bad,” she said happily, heading for the stairs and making her way to Chris to help get Jax tacked up.
Dave watched the two dip out of the arena, a frown now underneath his mustache. She really did seem like a pleasant young woman. Sensible, polite, not shy to engage in conversation. And yet...he just felt a dread in his heart. This wasn’t love. So then...why? Why were they both still acting like this wasn’t going to just cause hurt and frustration in the end?
Dave sighed, rubbing his eyes, trying to remember he was half the age he felt. It made sense he felt protective of his son. But now even the young lady that was doomed from the start crept into his ever growing book of worries. He was sure he had some contagious disease. One where he felt compelled to father any source that needed it. Including himself. He needed to father a growing headache with a strong drink.

Storywise, Dave just trying to scope the new girlfriend. And instead now has more children he feels he has to father. Dave's one of those dads that needs to be everyone's dad. He was born to be a dad. If your character needs a dad to groan over all their life choices and feel compelled to gently scold them, I have a Dad for you.
