Jarin  never expected an apology from Chris . Jarin never thought Chris said anything to him that warranted an apology. Granted, he did tell him he hoped his horse broke every bone in his body … However, that day, Jarin could see there was something more going on with Chris; that he looked really upset. And lots of people did things they didn’t mean when they were upset. Jarin was beginning to fully understand that. Hearing Chris apologize for his actions - just out of the blue, not told to by anybody, Jarin hadn’t even brought it up - that was… well, it made Jarin feel a little more confident somehow. Like, maybe he wasn’t a complete disaster, despite his questionable life choices.
That confidence carried over as Jarin had a final opportunity after talking it over with both Tristan  and Dave  that gave him the go-ahead (if he dared). He just had to push that last ounce of doubt back - that heavy thud and loud crack of hooves that he could still hear so crisp in his ears when Hakuna took that fall in the mud . It was okay to make mistakes. This could be one too, but it was okay. Jarin straightened up and loudly asked, “Hey, Chris!?”
Chris about jumped out of his skin, halting in his tracks. Christ, Jarin hadn’t left yet from his lesson with Dave. Fuck, what did he want now? “What?” Chris muttered, tucking his hands in hi jacket pockets and turning to face him.
“Could I-” Jarin hesitated. It was harder to face Chris now that he was taller than him! Like there was a lot more weight in his gaze now. Jarin swallowed and tried again, “I…was wondering if it’s not uhm…if you didn’t mind - I checked the schedule and I asked Taysom  and he said it was clear and Tristan said I could and Dave didn’t mind and I, well, I really thought maybe, if you didn’t mind-” Chris’s gaze started to wander, tipping his head away already looking for an exit if this was going to continue like this. Jarin saw the disinterest and willed himself to just spit it out already, “Could I ride Hakuna again!?”
That got the cold eyes back on him. With no hesitation, Chris raised a brow, “Why?”
“Because I think he’s really cool! And I like riding him! Or I used to…”
“Those are stupid reasons. You would say that about any horse.”
“Well! …yea,” Jarin muttered quietly. “But! I really miss Hakuna. And I…” Jarin hung his head a little, feeling small, “I just wanted to try again. And try to be better. For Hakuna. I don’t want him thinking I’m as bad as I used to be.”
Chris furrowed his brows, more so out of confusion. He never did understand Jarin. What did a horse care about how crappy of a rider he was? Jarin thought of horses like they were people and it was weird. Honestly, right down to it, Chris didn’t care if Jarin rode Hakuna or not. He didn’t understand what his obsession was about but if he was going to act like it mattered so damn much, Chris was at least going to get something out of it. He sighed and shrugged, “Fine. But only if you do a favor for me.”
“YEA! SURE! ANYTHING!!” Jarin was starstruck! He could ride Hakuna!!! Whatever it took, Jarin would do it!!

Much to the surprise to Dave and Chris, Jarin intended to take Hakuna into the Endurance class and not the Showjumping class like they had assumed. Either way, it didn’t bother either one. If anything, it was somehow safer that way. Less murder poles and death jumps to flail over. Jarin was abuzz on Hakuna, trembling in the saddle, he was so excited to sit on him again. He adored Hakuna. For everything he symbolized to Jarin. It all started as chance. Dave shoved Hakuna out of the stable so no one knew he owned the horse - gross dilute and a spots and things. And Jarin volunteered for an Endurance ride  that changed his world! That’s where he met some of his first friends outside of his own stable! Elias  and Miyo . A friendship he held near and dear. One he’d never forget.
As Hakuna trotted down the path, Jarin posted easily, looking over the frosty morning fields. It was a lovely spring morning. Greenery was coming to life even through the chilly morning. The clouds lingered from their night’s slumber, lazily scooting across the horizon. Jarin smiled and patted Hakuna’s neck, “I saw Elias a little while ago! We talked about all sorts of stuff! Super embarrassing stuff. Like…no, I shouldn’t say,” Jarin laughed.
Jarin rode in silence for a moment or two longer, remembering some of the advice Elias had given him. He had never talked about what happened to him with Sydney  to anyone else. Tristan had been there shortly after, so he was the only other person that had an idea. No one else knew. No one. And Jarin never thought he should tell anyone. For some reason, Elias just nudged it out of him. And once Jarin felt like he wasn’t going to hate him for what he did, it all just kind of fell out of his mouth.
Jarin kept a somber smile on his lips, “I told him all about it. Well, as much as I could say. I’ve felt so bad about being the guy that got tricked by a married guy. Lied to. He broke my heart, Hakuna. And I thought I broke his. But it was already broken when he came to me.” Jarin rubbed his nose, a sniff escaping him. He was not going to cry.
He sat deeper in the saddle and cued for Hakuna to roll into a collected canter as the trail leveled out a bit. Jarin sat up tall, still quietly talking to only the nature around him to listen, “I went to jail, I got a tattoo, I dyed my hair, I got into fights, I slept with someone else. He made fun of me, he called me names, he cheated on his wife, he lied to me, he fought me. We fought each other. And I thought the worst was going to be-” Jarin got choked up a little, “Well, when I thought I wasn’t ready for marriage and I thought,” he chuckled helplessly at how stupid he felt, thinking back on it now, “When I thought he was going to marry me.”
Jarin kept on smiling, sniffing back harder. He leaned forward as the trail followed the incline of a rising hill. “People can be together however they want, but the important thing is that they agree on the rules. That’s what Elias told me. We didn’t know the rules. I didn’t know the rules. I never made any. I didn’t know there should be rules. But I do now, Hakuna,” Jarin reassured the horse as if it mattered.
“I don’t know if what Justin  said was true. About Sydney thinking I could save him from all the bad things happening to him. I don’t…” Jarin thought on it some more as they crested the hill. Jarin let Hakuna come back to a forward trot as he looked at the distant rolling hills. Pretty… “You gotta trust each other and care about each other,” Jarin repeated another bit of advice from Elias. “That wasn’t in the rules.”

“You aren’t going to get back together with him, are you?” Elias asked Jarin. “Lying about being married is a pretty big no-no, bud. And sure, most couples get into arguments sometimes, but it sounds like you guys had some pretty serious fights. Wait- you were talking about how you hurt each other and did bad things to each other… was that, like, arguing and breaking each other’s hearts, or were you guys actually physically fighting?”
"I-uh- n-no!" Jarin flailed his hands, "He's married! I, well- I thought that since he's married, that means I should stay away from him. That's what Tristan says too. My housemate. Stay away from him and ignore him," Jarin recited his rehearsed lines.

“But he’s getting a divorce…” Jarin mentioned quietly to Hakuna after the thought. “Hakuna, I sh- ooooh!! I should take a picture and send it to Elias and Miyo!!” And just like that, Jarin’s attention span snapped. He set his reins down, remembering fondly what Elias told him:
“We’re your friends, bud. You can always give a call or send a message or something if you’re having a bad time. Miyo’s all about that supportive shit.”
And that landed them both a picture of the back of Hakuna’s head, ears pointed down the trail of the spring morning with the caption: “BOOMERANG GANG! <333” A throwback to the team’s name where he very first met the both of them.

JARIN~ HAKUNA~ REUINTED AT LAST! <333
I nevr intended for them to get separated x'''O Bad things happened and I spooked Jarin from Hakuna! It's been years for him to work up the courage to ask again! Oh man, how time heals wounds!

Speaking of wounds...Jarin doing some reflecting here on his own predicament. It's kind of nice for the boy to actually have some space to just air his feelings. He's not a bottler by any means but he doesn't really get the opportunity to just spit it out! Or if he does, it's certainly not in the company that wants to hear it x''D But Hakuna doesn't care xD He just hears "bla bla bla" and does his thing <3

I didn't think I'd get this piece done in time! Thought, eh, well I'll at least have a lit entry. Eh, well, I'll at least have a sketch. Eh, well, I'll at least have a flat colored thing. Eh, well - wait, I finished it. For the boys <3 They deserved it. <33
