Description
Selene is the ancient greek goddess of the moon, considered by the greeks to be the moon itself, and is daughter of the titans Hyperion and Theia before the gods of Olympus. She is the sister of Helios (the sun) and Eos (the dawn) and is renown for her love affair with the shepherd prince Endymion. The beautiful boy was granted eternal youth and immortality by Zeus and placed in a state of eternal slumber, where Selene would visit him every night.

Selene was said to be a beautiful woman with pale skin, with a chariot of horses, oxen or serpents or riding a horse or bull. she was depicted with a half moon on her forehead or in her cloak. She is described in some hymns as "far-winged" (like the wings of a bird). Her name is believed to be connected to the greek word selas, meaning brightness.

I have tried to work these elements into this piece, including the half moon, wings, brightness, pale skin and the moon as an attempt to work some of her story and symbolism into the piece.
