That's hanfu, not kimono. Kimono is from Japan while hanfu is from China.

Well if you "really" want to get into it,

Kimono can also be called "Gofuku," (since the word Kimono only came into use when Western clothing was growing in popularity in Japan, to help differentiate between the two in conversation) meaning "Clothing of Wu." Wu was one of the Three Kingdoms warring for supremacy over China (220-280) as the earliest Kimono were HEAVILY derived from the Chinese clothing at the time.

So if we really, reaaaaally, trace back in time a couple thousand years, Kimono have a very heavy Chinese background, as with many other aspects of Japan.

Also, fun fact. Kimono literally means "Thing to wear" as "ki" means wear and "mono" means thing.

This is pretty cool. I really liked how the colors were very soft and not too harsh, but I just wanted to say that what she's wearing might fit under the category of hanfu. I don't know if there is any clothing called chinese kimono.

It would be perfect if you hadn't call it Kimono. Considering its a Hanfu. There's no such thing as "Chinese Kimono."
Kudos on the pretty art though.

Exactly on this. There is no such thing as a "Chinese kimono". The original name is the hanfu, originating even further beyond the Han Dynasty and even beyond the Spring and Autumn Warring Nations Era of the Zhou Dynasty, though...considering this, they didn't know what to call it back then. But, yep. It should be called the Chinese Hanfu.

RedFullMoon-Ice In reply to aisucafe [2012-04-10 00:16:56 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. The outfit should be called a Chinese hanfu, not a kimono. Kimonos exist only in the Japanese context, even in history, and considering that the Chinese hanfu existed even before the Zhou Dynasty...it's kinda strange that someone would call it the "Chinese kimono" instead of the Chinese hanfu. Ah, well...mistakes happen, I guess.

Can't say much because I am Japanese and this person identifies as Chinese, so.... X'D

RedFullMoon-Ice In reply to aisucafe [2012-04-11 17:38:07 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm Chinese-American, and even I know that real Chinese outfits are hanfu (not to mention all the details and so forth), which means this person probably either...1) is not too great with English or 2) has a bad understanding of history. The second is unlikely, though, given that Chinese history is really damn hard for a Chinese individual to miss like that. :/

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RedFullMoon-Ice In reply to Gaaras-my-Hubbie [2012-04-10 00:11:13 +0000 UTC]

Not to mention...the Chinese outfit here is a Hanfu, not a kimono. Just keep in mind of the names. The Chinese had a different way of dressing, and their outfits like these are known to be around in the earlier dynasties before even the First Emperor...which is why it would be confusing to call it a kimono.
