Description

The Berlin Class is an experimental project intended to be used as an emergency ship or first responder within the federation territories. Constructed in 2376 and refited with slipstream engines in 2380.

When the missing USS Voyager returns from the Delta Quadrant in 2378, she brought a couple new technologies from her long lone journey. Most prominent, the Quantum Slipstream drive, an advanced form of interstellar propulsion allowing starships to break through the warp speed barrier. The quantum slipstream drive allowed the ship to "sprint" shorter distances. For safety reasons, these drives could only be operated for a short time before they had to be switched off. In this short time, however, the spaceship was able to cross an entire sector of space in a couple of minutes, which would have taken several days with conventional warp propulsion. After a short period of charging and recalibrating, they could be reactivated for another "sprint".

Equipped with a wide array of engineering and medical facilities, long-range transporters, rescue vehicles, and high-resolution deep-space sensors, she is more capable of responding to disasters than purely scientific ships in Starfleet, let alone the more military-oriented ships in the fleet.

In addition to the slipstream capability that can quickly bring the ship to the scene of the incident, the Berlin class has improved deep-range sensors and long-range transporters, both of which actually come from mining operations. In search of the best resource deposits, Federation miners had to optimize their search for the fact that those rock veins were typically very deep in the ground. Highly optimized sensors make it easier to detect these veins. Starfleet was very interested in these scanners because they could also be used to search for buried people.

Similar to the hospital ships of the Olympic and Hope classes, the Berlin class has a larger contingent of medical specialists to be able to provide first aid immediately in an emergency with many injured people.

During the fleet-wide ship upgrade program in 2380, the Berlin also received a modernization of its defense systems. The standard Type X phasers she previously possessed have been completely replaced with Type XII quantum phasers.

Due to the limited use for emergencies only, Starfleet is refraining from producing this class in large numbers. Four units are currently planned over the next 5 years. Additional units could be produced if the concept proves to be worth it.
