this is really awesome, all I can think of when looking at it is a video game featuring your creatures

This is just beyond amazing!  I am loving this creature and the way it runs!  I would love to see this actually animated!

this really helps how a creature with more then four limbs can run and not just insect!

Who has not dreamed of a six-legged creature once in his life?

The moving cycle is great, but I have one or two little problems:

a) How would a walk cycle look like?
b) How would the organs be arranged around the middle pair of legs? How would the legs be connected to the back bone, and how would the muscles be arranged?

exo-bio In reply to Fermin-Tenava [2015-10-11 16:41:11 +0000 UTC]

Well it would have been a little difficult to put ALL of that into one run sequence. I am thinking about all of these things, they just aren't uploaded at the moment.

Oh no, my question was more universally aimed, not a critique on your work.

But I'm excited for your thoughts

I wonder how this would look like animated Have you made one to demonstrate it?
Very great work on the gait though! I remember I once saw someone try to come up with computer generated plausible gaits for more than four legs, but most of them were just walking, not gallops, and most of the time the simulation fell over its own feet. This looks much more refined and as so disgraceful

Thank you! I am actually working on an animation right now. We'll see how it turns out, I'm doing it drawn one frame at a time so it may take a while...

This is a great work. I wanted to draw a six legged creatures, but wondered how they could run. And I didn't came out with a plausible idea.
I like the kangaroo-like posture, when the middle and hindlegs jump.
I would love to see a trot and walk.
Well done!

I like how each leg pair works to make its own push off the ground. I feel like these things could really fly over huge distances in a single cycle of each leg hitting the ground.

Me too, I think that there would be 3 airborne cycles in their gallop.

Maybe the front and middle set of legs would work more in unison? Or would the middle set be too far back for that? Or maybe the middle set don't even need to touch the ground every stride, but be used more for stabilization or making sharp maneuvers? All these sketches look really great, though. You managed to take something inherently gangly (6 legs, man) and make it look sleek and elegant.

That's what I'm working on now, trying to figure out which would be more realistic.

i think it might vary depending on the individual creature, although i have to admit i was not much of a fan of the "linked foreleg" in Avatar, for example. the way it has been done in that particular case was criticised on many occasions.

point remains, we have insects who are a great model for a walking gait - the double tripod - and as far as running goes, this illustration here is probably the best run for a hexapod creature with a flexible spine i have seen to date. very well done. crafted with care and well-observed from mammals. the middle pair of legs really does fill the purpose here of giving the animal an extra push just before the hindlegs take over again. i think this succession is very realistic and solid.

hexapods with inflexible spines would be a different story, doomed to using a very rapid double tripod gait for quick movement or hopping with all legs in unison, otherwise it would kick itself.

interestingly, cockroaches - some of the fastest insects - lift their front fore legs and only use their hindlegs to reach those speeds. alien hexapods could do the same as well

I didn't like the linked foreleg in Avatar either, it seems like they'd trip a lot, and I believe the limb options for hexapodal organisms has much more potential then how it was portrayed in Avatar. I think linking the forelegs were easier to animate for the effects crew

PeteriDish In reply to exo-bio [2015-11-28 12:55:21 +0000 UTC]

that may have very well been the case for the animators, but we have hexapodal animals for reference (insects) and their movement has been extensively studied, so the info was out there. well, as for avatar, it is what it is. that leg arrangement was really clumsy and impractical, and sometimes the legs seemed to move through each other, which i didn't like at all, only goes to show a real animal couldn't have had legs like that. as much as i didn't like land beasts of avarat, i very much enjoyed the air beasts. they were great imho! (seriously though, who would dislike wyverns... )

This is really interesting! Hexapod movement is rarely done properly so I find it great that you're tackling the topic!
