"Felix Felicis," based on Chapter 22 of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, meant to portray Harry as he contemplates the small golden bottle filled with "liquid luck." I feel this is one of the most underrated moments in the literature that contributed directly to Harry's future...and his uncovering of the truth, and what leads to Voldemort's demise.

This is really a minimalist piece: pared down to only the essentials of the story, it's only Harry's face, his scarf (his mark of being a Gryffindor), and his hand holding the bottle, shining out of the darkness.

PRINTS ARE NOT YET SOLD OUT. This limited edition print is still available as a beautiful 11x14" exhibition-quality print.

This print sold at the Azkatraz charity auction for $110 in July 2009.

Excellent image. And I agree with you about the importance of the 'Felix Felicis moment', though I had not realized that I did. Strong yet subtle, understated. Again, a very strong image.

Got this one at Azkatraz I'm going to frame it at some point. This and the Luna-Squid one are my favorites. I hope to see more of your work at later conventions!

You got the second to last print of "Felix Felicis"! "Felix Felicis" is one of my favorite paintings, and you are lucky, because at the auction, it sold for $110 There will be no more print editions for the time being of this painting, since I want to focus on revisioning Harry. I have a few other ideas I want to play with, including Harry and the Golden Snitch in Chapter 34 of "Deathly Hallows," the scene of "I open at the close."

You can see my work before conventions (I think Infinitus may be my last convention) on DA or my LJ (under the same username).

Pretty good... Just one thing strikes me weird and that's the lack of lashes, even the upper eyelid... It's hard to look at him without staring at the naked edges of the eyelids >w<

foxestacado In reply to Techmaga [2009-04-18 03:34:26 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! You're absolutely right, there are no eyelashes on him...it was a bit of an artistic decision to do that, because every time I put eyelashes on men, it makes them look much more feminine than they already are, and I can't quite get past that. So I decided no eyelashes...although in the future, I will definitely try my hand at adding eyelashes on men more effectively

Techmaga In reply to foxestacado [2009-04-18 19:33:21 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, then maybe what you should do is add short eyelashes, not all flowy, long and thick. Let me find an example:

Not bad for males:

Compare to usual female:

I was very impressed by this work. my idea of harry potter is usually too close to the one of the movie (that's because I saw the movies first) but when I saw this i realized it's an original work and I appreciate that. congrats! and I'm happy people watch it thanks to me !

foxestacado In reply to aryundomiel [2008-11-22 20:38:07 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! Yes, my Harry Potter is actually not based on Daniel Radcliffe...but it looks very much like him anyways. When I first saw Sorcerer's Stone, I was amazed by how close Daniel Radcliffe came to *my* vision of Harry Potter...it is really a remarkable likeness, from the one in my head, and the one we see on screen.

aryundomiel In reply to foxestacado [2008-11-22 21:56:01 +0000 UTC]

yes but he's not exactley the same, and because of this it's possible to see your vision...and this is something I like very mutch

foxestacado In reply to aryundomiel [2008-11-24 22:44:47 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! I appreciate that a lot. I think if I drew him too much like Daniel Radcliffe, people will associate Harry with the movies (which, although I love, are still very different from the books), and of course, the actor.

This is a real melancholic portrait of Harry. You have captured his essence, being the abandoned and orphan boy he was, trying to find momentary happiness in a potion that could make him feel happy... You make me love Harry again, like I used to.

Thank you for sharing..

foxestacado In reply to Veronika-Art [2008-10-19 00:50:08 +0000 UTC]

Wow, thank you so much for this thoughtful response to the painting! You have put the essence of Harry I was trying to capture in more eloquent phrasing than I can muster at this point.

You also brought up an interesting point: "Felix felicis" is not the "happy potion," but he sure felt happy after he drank it, yes? I'm not sure if he knew that (my guess is he didn't), but it's funny how "luck" for him (or maybe for all of us) manifests in his confidence, his "feeling" of luck, and knowing that he is complete control of his destiny. And yet, every single move he made while potioned brought him closer to a truth about Voldemort that would be undeniable, and bring him face to face with his prophesied destiny. I dunno...I find that incredibly ironic

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Veronika-Art In reply to foxestacado [2008-10-20 15:55:50 +0000 UTC]

ahhh yes, being Latin and undestanding a lot of it, the actual translation of "Felix Felicis" : lucky, fortunate, happy. Indeed in JK Rowlings context in HBP, this was a lucky potion, but underneath it, is happiness... Feliz=felicidad=Happiness (Spanish).

Ironic like you point out, that this brought his closer to the truth about Lord Voldemort and bringing him face to face with his destiny ... I find that Harry really found the confidence he needed to control his "destiny"...

Yet, I find your illustration quite sad and thoughtfull... like his life ...

Sorry for the rant, but this is my fave book!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

foxestacado In reply to Veronika-Art [2008-10-21 01:19:14 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh, good point, good point. I didn't even think to analyze the actual name of the potion, and I really should have, given that I studied Latin for three years in high school (although I cannot claim I know it very well!)

Yes, I chose to illustrate the foreboding of the potion, the fact that Harry, after taking the potion, will learn the truth of Tom Riddle, and how to defeat him (or be killed by him, as the prophecy suggests).

It is interesting how Harry did not even think to use Felix Felicis to his own ends. There was never quite a point where I remember that Harry thought, "I can use Felix Felicis to do ______." It was Hermione who had to suggest to him to use it. More selfish people would have probably used the potion to gain something for themselves, but Harry uses it to learn about Tom Riddle, and later gives it to his friends so that they would be protected. He says he wanted to save it for "something very important," which is what he did.

Hehehe, I loved HBP, but Deathly Hallows, though sad, was my fave book
