Description Canon EOS 5D mk1
Canon 50mm f/1.4

Shot this back in September of 2010 near North Bend, NE with *Nebraskies . The air was incredibly crisp and clear that night, making it easy to see the Milky Way with the naked eye. Not sure if the small streak just above the house is a plane, satellite, or meteor. My guess would be an iridium flare off of a satellite. The abandoned house in the foreground made for a fantastic scene. Can't wait to get out again and shoot more star photos!

Please tell me what you think!

The sky isn't processed in CS5? Wow.......nice take. I have never seen so much clarity in the sky at night before.

At first glance I thought it was a manip, but reading your description, I'm just blown away by what you've captured!! That sky is just breathtaking.

For the record, my original comment got lost in a firefox crash...

This was wonderfully captured and it turned out very beautiful. The foreground however needs some tweaking. It isn't badly composed, in fact the composition in the frame is great. What does bother me is the fact that it is not entirely sharp and it is lit just enough to where you can see hints of the house's detail. I think it would look much better if you were to do either two things. One would to have been to either use another exposure for the foreground and get the house decently lit with possibly even a smaller aperture (to make sure it is all sharp and in focus). You could either use the natural light of the stars/moon or you could illuminate it yourself with either flashes or anything else that would illuminate it (I think it would look better with you illuminating it). The other option is to go back in post and burn out the details of the house making it a pure silhouette. With the small bits of detail there it becomes way too distracting and doesn't make the shot as good as it could be in my opinion.

I apologize if any points were confusing, I just didn't have the effort to think thought my phrasing as much.

Thank you. Lighting it with a flashlight would have been possible. However, my friend was doing a timelapse of the stars behind the house, so I didn't want to screw up his images. No way I could have exposed it any lighter, this was at f/1.4, ISO 3200 at 20 seconds. Guess I could have done 30 seconds but like you said, even then not a lot of the house would be in focus. I kept that bit of detail in there because it keeps the image balanced. If I burned out the detail, wouldn't it look a little heavy on the bottom? Guess I could try

Sorry on the late reply...
I understand that you couldn't artificially light it, that makes sense. What I would do since you couldn't artificially light it would to use the bulb setting to get the exposure over 30 seconds, and even though it will make the exposure a ton longer, use a wider aperture than f/1.4 (I'd say f/4 at least).
That is completely my opinion though

As for burning everything in I would have to agree with you. I took the liberty of burning it in myself and it does make it oddly bottom-heavy.
