Master Mold
First Appearance: The X-Men #15 (December 1965)

"If man made us, then they are God. And mutants are the titans, their spoiled lineage. But while you war, we children sit in judgment of those above us... We judge and find you both wanting. Do you hear us, Olympus? We have stolen your fire, and with it, we will burn you all."

This was the statement that the Master Mold program gave when it came online. To the survivors of the Sentinel controlled wastelands, this was the statement that ended the world. In fear of the Dark Phoenix mankind turned to the Sentinels to fight back against mutants in a war many deemed existential. In a decade or less it was predicted mutants would outnumber baseline humans, and many believed the Sentinels to be their best defense. The Master Mold program was designed to make Sentinels self-sufficient, a master command module that could produce new Sentinels autonomously while also reprogramming itself and its new units to give it whatever edge it deemed necessary. But the activation of this program proved to be a fatal error. With its vast computational speeds the Master Mold quickly reprogrammed itself to destroy not only mutants, but the source of mutants: humans. Every computer system on the planet was soon overtaken by its code, and by the time it began construction of its new units it was too late.

A world ruled by metal and wires, overrun by an endless army of constantly adapting machines; these were the days of future past mutant survivors like Lucas Bishop and Rachel Summers had fled in order to subvert. While the attempt to stop the appearance of the Dark Phoenix had failed, Bishop still believed it was possible to halt this from ever coming to pass, so long as the Master Mold never came online. His target became Project Armageddon, not only because they were the primary Sentinel developer in the present day, but because it was common knowledge in Bishop's time that the Master Mold had been based on the digitized mind of a man--the head of Project Armageddon, Steven Lang.

But in the present day he died in a battle against the X-Men aboard a space station (an event I mentioned in Lockheed's entry), so tracking down a dead guy's brain might be difficult. In Bishop's timeline, the Master Mold is more or less an omnipresent computer program in control of all Sentinels (and really, every computer system on the planet). But there is one primary "factory" Sentinel that survivors tend to (perhaps erroneously) call "Master Mold"--a huge, skyscraper sized behemoth that births new Sentinels and has been rebuilt a thousand times over by the Master Mold using repurposed pieces from previous models, rendering the latest version a hideous, twisted monstrosity.

Whew, that was a lot to get through. The Master Mold, basically the "boss Sentinel" in the comics, has taken many forms over the years. Here, I decided to make it the linchpin of the Days of Future Past timeline that Bishop and Rachel Summers come from, *the* thing that ruins the world, kinda similar to the Wolverine & the X-Men show. Though in my depiction it is less of a singular big bad and more of a killer program that has taken over the entire planet--basically Skynet from Terminator. The physical "Master Mold" is basically the primary Sentinel factory unit here that the people have just decided to call Master Mold to give it a focal point. I also decided to have my Master Mold be based on the brain of Steven Lang (who I have to emphasize is *not* related to Ant-Man), like one of the incarnations of the Master Mold in the comics. My viewpoint of the Sentinels in my universe is that they are the absolute worst thing humanity can create, the ultimate expression of mankind's hatred and hubris. Ultron was a cosmic quirk, the Master Mold is humanity overstepping their boundaries and destroying themselves.

The quote I listed as its first statement there is paraphrased from the Mother Mold (Master Mold of Master Molds) coming online in Jonathan Hickman's utterly fantastic House of X #4, I just like the line so much I had to include it.

But okay--yes, this is the design I said was by far my most complicated and labor intensive I have ever done, and I was not exaggerating. This guy took me forever. Every. Single. Aspect of this design took forever, from concept phase, to line art, to color, to shading, to detailing, to cleanup, fucking everything took *forever.* I am really glad I don't plan on drawing this thing again. Giant characters in general already take me longer, and this thing is just so damn detailed on top of that. What I really wanted to do was make it look less like just a really big Sentinel and more like a monster made of metal. A grotesque abomination, a Sentinel made of other Sentinels, this terrible *thing* that would send shivers down any survivor's spine as it appears over the horizon. Maybe a big horn or something gets played like when the tripods appear in War of the Worlds, I dunno, haha. Sentinels falling out of its back or something, cutting down every living being they see. I imagine every time they manage to destroy this primary factory Master Mold it is rebuilt more horrible than it was before. Two big inspirations for this design were Cassandra Nova's Wild Sentinels as well as the Ten Sentinel from the X-Men '92 book, specifically as it appears on Pepe Larraz's cover of X-Men '92 #4.

Concerning its size, this is not drawn to scale with everything else--I just drew it as large as I'm willing to draw these characters. So if you put their pictures side by side the Master Mold and my Sentinel would look basically the same height, but Master Mold is intended to be like Godzilla sized, absolutely dwarfing the lesser models.
