Description I was trying painting in black and white and then colouring afterwards. The idea appeals to me but I don't know how people manage to make it work so well. Β I think I prefer this in BW anyway .

These both are nice. I have been trying to color black and white image but without success.

Thanks man! Yeah it doesn't seem to work the way you want it too. Β I'm doing it again just now and I think it helps to avoid extreme white black areas because the colour doesn't really transfer on to those... tweak the contrast and add highlights afterwards . I think it'll take much more practice to figure out what really works

Love both, but yeah, the bw one with the red behind her looks more wow.
I've tried that coloring technique only once and i didn't get the results i was hoping for. Don't know what i did wrong.Β Β

Yeah, it requires a bit more thought than I realized

Really well done I'd say! Black and white seems to be more appealing, for some reason. But I like both here. Β

Thanks! I think the contrast with the red background might be giving the black and white version the edge

Wow, I think there both stunning. I just tend to put the colours or tone on and hope for the best!

I agree. B&W always catches my eye first but I think that is how most artist are wired. Like a coloring book. I do both methods of shading before and sometimes afterwards. But I do find with skin tones it seems to look better if I use darker skin tones for shading. Using monochrome on skin always seems to make the skin seem dirty instead of shaded. Otherwise B&W seems to work well on everything else. That is my novice 2 cents.

Great job as always. Nice face study.

I know what you mean, skin always seems to get a grubby metallic look to it when I do it this way. I maybe should have used less contrast on the skin or just softened it a bit.

I find it harder to get the colour saturation right working this way, but I must admit I think it's easier to nail the values working in black and white only.Β

Btw, both look awesome, but the black and white version slightly edges it for me. As we know, mine is a world sparing of colour...

Yeah I like the concept but unfortunately you can't just add flat colours to it and be like "ta-daaaa!"Β so after all the fiddling about I don't think if it would really save me any time doing things this way.
*sigh*... you and your black and white world

Haha, I'm getting more colourful by the day...although while you seem to be on fire lately, I'm all sizzled out! Been a loooong week man. The inclination to touch stylus to tablet is not strong in me latelyΒ Β

griffinator In reply to DonnyGreen [2015-03-23 15:36:52 +0000 UTC]

I've colored the last few things in photoshop but I'm still sketching on my note (because it's much more responsive than my crappy old laptop).Β I just figured I'm making life more difficult than it needs to be by doing everything in Sketchbook mobile. Β
Plus I want to move on to doing some bigger/more detailed images and I think that's probably going to be quicker and easier in photoshop.

funny! I have a hard time managing color and value at the same time so I love painting in b&w

griffinator In reply to shannanapeels [2015-03-23 15:28:16 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I quite like painting in black in white too but adding the color afterwards doesn't seem to work very well for me

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

shannanapeels In reply to griffinator [2015-03-25 14:13:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's tough to figure out what mode to set each layer to. Β Most people say "put the b&w layer on multiply" or "put the color layer on color" but those don't seem to work very well for me. Β Honestly, I usually just make the b&w layer a little translucent. ^u^ I'm probably doing something wrong O.O Anyway, I think you did an awesome job with the color

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

griffinator In reply to shannanapeels [2015-03-26 17:37:05 +0000 UTC]

Well thanks! I usually work with a layer for flat color with a little shading, a multiply layer for shadows, a layer for highlights and another for backlight... so using the color layer above a black and white image isn't something I'm really used to. It might be better once I've tried it a bit more
