Description For K. <3

Oh, I love piratey things. This picture makes me happy, because i managed to diversify a bit into a genre I love but have not much experience of.

Which is why we have John Mereii, gentleman pirate. And Wensley... sock monkey pirate. Yarrrhahaharrrr!
I bet whatever version of Allan this John has just loves his son's choice of career. To death.

This is influenced by the work of Howard Pye, a brilliant classical illustrator who was fond of the genre, and Darrell Warner, concept artist for the POTC movies. He uses these very soft, very fabricy tones that make everything look amazingly 3-D and authentically worn. I love the look of sepia-toned drawings like Lackadaisy and Gabo's stuff, and I wanted to make this look like it'd been in an attic for years. Yaarrrs.

Oh, and! I did my homework, or rather I asked Bob to do it for me. Since this picture is set in the 1600-1700's, and the Campbell clan in Argyll, Scotland who are said to have invented the Argyle fabric pattern were first heard of in the 1200's, and also since lots of the soldiers that travelled from England to the Caribbean were Scottish, it is possible that he could have had an argyle-patterned belt-cloth-thing. It's essentially the piratical equivalent of wearing an argyle jersey. You can take the Mereii out of the office, but you can't take the officious, vest-wearing squareness out of the Mereii.

Although it was about four hours work, it took longer because i kept getting distracted. I had to clone out the perforation marks because it was only supposed to be a quick sketch when I started, so I did it on my rough office pad thing. I also broke the firing pan off my plastic flintlock pistol trying to take a reference photo. I'd be a pants freebooter.

Reminds me a little of Brett Helquist's work, too, for some odd reason, even though there's none of his trademark crosshatching ...

Sailing for adventure on the big blue wet thing...? This picture is awesome, and one should always have a driving urge to drawy piraty things. Favorite.

He looks as though he's found something that he can really get into doing - and the fact that he's got a gun seals the deal!
Positively love it.

Excellent job! Hee, yeah, I can get behind the idea of Mereii the Pirate and Wensley his "monkey."

I love the flow of the clothes-and the monkey. XD The sepia tone gives the whole picture the perfect antiquted feel.

As a side note-guess who met Jhonen on Saturday?

...XD
