Description National Geographic calls you Mr. Big, but for me you are just Mr. Weird.

I produced this quick watercolor painting (with an "weird" and an "even weirder" stage) to illustrate a new hypothesis about Spinosaurus posture which is a bit more
Ibrahim-friendly. The author is no one else than Andrea Cau, who, I think is maybe the best man to mediate between the two positions.
Here his article about this reconstruction: translate.google.com/translate… |en&tbb=1&ie=UTF-8
I used for this painting a All Yesterdays like style, inspired by pelicans and the Parasaurolophus painting of John Conway.
Cau's hypothesis is actually very near the thoughts I had about the new Spinosaurus neck, when I encountered the skeletal drawing for the first time my first thought (ok, here I'm lying, it was my second) was: "man, that's a neck for a powerful down-stroke. Here I made it a bit more mammal-like, but when following more bird anatomy it could be a bit more skinny too.
What would be the world without a few extremes

Edit... again: Now with two more likely versions

I hope for more information and follow the discussion very curious, let's see what comes next.

Graphic from Ibrahim et al. 2014, modified by Cau.

Note at the end: this is a fast produced piece without the try to make something scientific important, it's more another stone I through in the arena of discussions

Nice theoretically possible neck tissue design. But based on our knowledge with birds, the 3rd and 4th neck designs seem to be the most accurate. They would also allow more neck flexibility and make their heads and necks dive through the water easier with less water resistance; like a duck, geese, or swan.

Holy Crap !

You started to draw ((new)) Spinosaurus !

The so called newer look is not that accurate;
Do you know about the Subadult/Other Species and Chimera theories ?

The last bipedal one with feathers seem to be most accurate one
But again if the new SpinoSeallus or SpinoWalrus theory true (probably not) this mr. Dork is no longer a very intersting and 'great' species (At least for me) but an easter 'joke' egg among dinosaur/avian genera

But of course Great Pictures

Hyrotrioskjan In reply to mutantninja0 [2015-02-24 23:13:49 +0000 UTC]

Why?
Why not, dinosaurs aren't hippos, and ducks and penguins and many other birds don't seem to have problems with that.
In addition we don't know to much time Spinosaurus used to be in the water so that's totally ok for me

Deinocheirus is even more insanely weird.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Stonehandthegiant In reply to acepredator [2015-02-21 07:39:45 +0000 UTC]

not really its just an example of convergent evolution therizinosaurs weren't in mongolia so the ancestor of deinocheirus evolved to exploit that niche. whereas spinosaurus was a near 60 foot shark eating titan which was supremely adapted to life in the water with gigantic arms a long neck a crocodile like head and a giant sail and webbed feet theres even evidence it was on the path to being fully aquatic as its hip structure was very similar to the early whale ambulocetus. suggesting it might have turned into some gigantic dinosaur whale if it kept going down the path towards aquatic life. sorry if deinocheirus is your favorite weird dinosaur but in the contest between therizinosaur mimic and sail backed dinosaur whale I think the dino whale wins hands down.

Now that I think about it, if Ibrahim's proportions are right I can see how the fourth one would work. The tail wouldn't just be skin over bones. It could have massive muscles that shift the CoG back over the hindlimbs.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hyrotrioskjan In reply to ProcrastinatingStill [2014-11-03 19:38:04 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, that were also my thoughts, more caudofemoralis musculature, neck in Cau-fashion, arms in pangolin style and the sail more prominent at the base of the tail and this guy is back on it's hindlimbs, it would be also interesting to know if the it had dense bones everywhere or only in the legs, in addition we still have no tail-tip of this beasts so maybe it was a bit longer

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ProcrastinatingStill In reply to Hyrotrioskjan [2014-11-08 15:17:25 +0000 UTC]

The tail doesn't have to be longer to shift the CoG. It could simply be more massive than Ibrahim et al. presumed (their CoG estimate was based on the assumption that Spinosaurus was shrink-wrapped).

Hyrotrioskjan In reply to ProcrastinatingStill [2014-11-15 16:59:10 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, that's something I considered in my newest restoration

ProcrastinatingStill In reply to Hyrotrioskjan [2014-11-19 00:12:36 +0000 UTC]

If the tail was massive, then Cau's neck pose wouldn't even be needed for bipedal movement.

Also I felt the need to post the link to this devation to the TvTropes Jurassic Park III trivia page because it does a good job showing how Spinosaurus could be bipedal with these odd proportions. Congrats!

If the neck position in correct, the bones in the legs are heavier, and the sail more caudal-heavy than Ibrahim et al. thinks it would be no problem

İt cant be Quadrepal because it can Not move if it is.

Because it arms (Even very advanced & lethal among theropods) they cannot support and/or move the Animal
And it is know Spinosaur do lived on the land
İt is more like a Godzilla/Crocodile Rex rather than SpinoPelicanasaurus (ie. Only a Fish eater can catch weakest of fish)

randomdinos In reply to Darklarik [2014-10-03 02:01:29 +0000 UTC]

Well, according to some theories it had several minor adaptations to help the body balance itself.

- A long tail, quite a bit longer than the original skeleton
- A sail that extends farther back in the body
- Heavy, solid bones in the legs to make them stronger
- Neck positioned vertically and not horizontally, like a heron's.

Hyrotrioskjan In reply to Darklarik [2014-09-23 11:57:52 +0000 UTC]

The problem is that the arms, shoulders and digits show no evidences for a quadrupedal livestyle (you can't just use theropod arms for walking on four limbs)
