Description My own personal Nerf Maverick ^_^

All I did was sand off the Nerf logos and take it apart to spray paint it a bit. After that some drybrushing with silver worked out well. Used truck bed liner for the handle bit but I'm not sure if that was really worth it. I myself did not mod the gun, but my old room mate helped me shave a few bits off so that the barrel can spin freely.

can you tell me how you dry brushed? and what kind of paint you used?

"I take some of the paint and brush it on a piece of paper until no more paint is coming off, but there is still paint in the brush. Then I brush the gun lightly and the paint still on the brush catches the raised surfaces of the gun. Some people do it differently though I believe." Copy pasted from another reply a while back.

I used a Silver Rustoleum American Accents latex based enamel for the drybrushing. Honestly I think that any decent acrylic based paint should have a similar result though, you should be able to find those at art supply stores but I would recommend miniature gaming paints like Chainmail from Games Workshop or other miniature paint companies like Vallejo or Reaper. Either way you should start out with light brush strokes and gradually apply more pressure till it looks like you want it to.

sand off? what does that mean?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Indefiknight In reply to Jakedj11 [2010-12-05 07:32:15 +0000 UTC]

I took some sand paper and rubbed the logos with it until the gun was flat there.

how do you avoid rubing it too far?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Indefiknight In reply to Jakedj11 [2010-12-05 10:53:13 +0000 UTC]

Well working with the sand paper isn't very quick, it takes some time to sand down the words and make it smooth. Since it takes a while to do, you can check periodically to see your progress. I would recommend using a medium grit to do most of the sanding, the coarser ones would scratch the surface more than you really want. Even better would be to have some fine grit as well, that way you can go over it again when you finish sanding it down to make it smoother.

I got some at Home Depot years ago, so I imagine you should be able to find it at any hardware store, possibly Wal-Mart, and maybe even grocery stores.

Home Depot is just a large hardware store chain around where I live, like Lowes. You could try using the store finder on www.homedepot.com to see if one is nearby where you live.

do you mod like for more power and stuff? if so, is there any way to make this gun semi-automatic without having to connect an air tank to it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Indefiknight In reply to Blake-TriforceMaster [2010-10-17 07:37:21 +0000 UTC]

I don't do a lot of modifications, the most I usually do is removing the air restrictors usually so I'm not sure of a way to make it semi-auto. You might check out nerfhaven.com, I know they have a lot of information about gun modifications on their forums.

If you don't mind me asking, what brand/color paints were used? I typically use Krylon Fusion in satin black, because I can't find flat black spray paint for plastic in my area :/

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Indefiknight In reply to twilo [2010-10-14 23:22:38 +0000 UTC]

That would probably work, from my understanding satin is somewhere in between glossy and matte, I just don't like the way glossy coats look. The Krylon satin black would probably work well for those parts of the gun that rub against each other at the very least.

I actually used a textured Rustoleum for plastics back when I made this, but I haven't seen that in the stores in a long time. More than likely any textured black should work just as well, that's what I've ended up using since then, though I can't give you a brand name anymore unfortunately. You can try it without the textured paint if you want, it would probably end up looking cleaner depending on how you drybrush.

Now, for the silver, I used Rustoleum American Accents latex based enamel. You might consider using something like Chainmail from Games Workshop or another silver color from other miniature paint companies like Vallejo or Reaper. The latex came out alright in the end but it's harder on my brushes I think.

A final note is that I used Dupli-Color Truck Bed Coating for the grip on the gun, but any spray on truck bed liner should work if you want to replicate that.

More than that your descriptions are really helpful. I could see this being a tutorial. Hopefully I can create something half as good as this.

I think you can The only tricky part is the drybrushing and I think the key there is starting off brushing lightly and then using more paint/force until it has the desired look.

I picked it up at an Oreilly Auto Parts store, but anything like Auto Zone and the like should have it in stock. The can I got says Dupli Color Truck Bed Coating.

I'm trying to modify a Maverick with a similar look. What'd you use to sand away the nerf logos anyway, anything special or the run of the mill stuff. And how'd you paint it so the pieces don't jam or stick, that's what's got me worried.

All questions aside, the gun came out excellent. A very nice job.

Indefiknight In reply to DragonmanX-90 [2009-12-30 05:15:59 +0000 UTC]

I just used a package I picked up at a hardware store which had a few different sheets of grains, nothing special. I think if you take cylinder and the cocking mechanism off and spray paint them separately that helps a bit. I also tried to use a non-textured spray paint on any areas that would be touching. Really though, I don't think there is anything on the gun that fits too tightly together so it should be ok.

It looks good, I started dry brushing stuff a few years ago and I've just kept on doing it because of how much detail pops out. Yeah it took a little time to sand everything off but I do like that clean look.

Do a search for "Nerf" on this website and 10 of the most popular 24 deviations feature the Nerf Maverick in some way or another. It must be like...the most popular nerf gun ever. Both of my friend's little brothers have one, and the guys at the comic book store have like six and shoot at each other with them all day. Maybe it's a conspiracy.
