Description Here's a little something... the full and final illustration for Crafty Games new RPG core book Fantasy Craft. Had a ton o' fun with this one, been itching to show it off.

I'll likely post a couple more detail shots so you can see the fiddly bits better, but in the meantime you can tap Download up there and check it out at 1200... have fun finding all the stylized inkthinker marks (more fun than a signature, but there's one of those buried in there as well). I don't actually think you'll be able to find them all at this size, but that's okay, 'cause I forget exactly how many there are in the first place.

The assistance of my crucial Fates cohort Kevin Delucia was elementary with this one, 'cause he totally set up the lighting scheme and the textures. I just went in and twiddled around with a brush to fill in the details, and hoo boy... I went a bit overboard with detail. 'Cause I crazy like that. You can compare it with the original pencil drawing here , and if you're just tuning in there's already a few detail shots scattered around the Gallery.

So it took a good while, but I had a lot of fun with it, and I'm continuing to do so... just wait until I get to start showing off the interior work.

Photoshop CS2 with an Intuos 9x12 over pencil on Bristol, ยฉ2007 Crafty Games LLC. You can check out all the news on the game and a mockup of the cover with the title at Crafty-Games.com

-EDIT-

Switched it out with one that's had a slight Curves tweak to kick up the brightness a little. Also pumped the fullview size to 1024, but you can still find the 1200 version under the Download button.

What i just thought - are 'we' POV- like the fifth member of their group?

Thank you!

I think they intended it more as the POV of a mighty monster... though it could be the POV of a character who's just been gobbled up.

I love the picture, but i have to ask. Who the heck is the demon looking guy with the poleaxe! Is he a kind of oni, just a demon, a djinn(they do look alot like that after all), or what?

Hi again,
so sorry to annoy u asking qeustions. How do u make a great comic cover to people want to read your comic?
And i found a usagi yojimbo comic! Yay! but can tell me the list of some usagi yojimbo that have some really good adventures and a little fighting.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Inkthinker In reply to darkdragon567 [2008-04-09 07:08:24 +0000 UTC]

Making a cover image eye-catching is a whole thing on its own... different things work for different stories, but if I had to come up with one suggestion it'd probably be to make the cover a promise that the story fulfills. That is to say, show me something on the cover that gets me to pick it up, but don't make it about something that doesn't happen or isn't followed up on within the story.

All Usagi comics are good, I think. It's all collected in various graphic novel volumes, any one of them is probably a good place to start.

I wish I was able to go crazy with the details like that!! This is one of those fantastic pieces you spend forever looking at, just to take it all in. Great work! My faves are the halfling and the skeleton. I truly enjoy the unique perspective as well.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Inkthinker In reply to chromegoddess [2008-01-10 10:27:46 +0000 UTC]

The skeleton? No kiddin'... it's the jaunty hat thing, isn't it?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

chromegoddess In reply to Inkthinker [2008-01-10 22:48:46 +0000 UTC]

Yup, the skeleton. The jaunty hat... and the fact he has been bitten (or ripped?) in half. I don't know. I just liked him.

I have been having issues with a throat infection for a month now, and my five year old just walked up to the computer when I was looking at this again. She asked, "Is that inside your throat?!"

Another side note... I find him quite charming (I don't know, maybe I'm morbid). Could I use him as my avatar?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Inkthinker In reply to chromegoddess [2008-01-11 08:18:58 +0000 UTC]

The skeleton? I don't suppose I mind... you'll have to crop and size it yourself, though.

Gerbil-Ghost [2008-01-06 19:46:31 +0000 UTC]

Well, it took you a while, as I saw in you other work, but it's worth waiting
only miss some shading on the floor of the demon at the bottem-right side. ( the axe i mean)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Inkthinker In reply to Gerbil-Ghost [2008-01-09 07:43:56 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't sure there should be a shadow for the axe on the floor, at least... with light being thrown up from the gold below, and the strong blast of light from the left, it seemed like there shouldn't be much of a shadow for something that far from the floor.

Unless you mean along the blade. Then yeah, that's a bit of a flub.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Gerbil-Ghost In reply to Inkthinker [2008-01-09 15:17:02 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, I ment the blade. Sorry I explained bad.

The floor doesen't need any shading due to the weakening magic lightsource in combination with the shiny gold. If there would be any shade, it would be fading, as it comes nearer the gold. But it doesen't bother me, and I hope the rest, at all.

Anyway, it's just a little remark, I do tribute my respect for the nice work you make...

Gerbil-Ghost In reply to Inkthinker [2008-01-16 10:43:59 +0000 UTC]

That's the reason people start with dA, to bad only some folks give comment...
I mean , all the "great" , "you're my god" things are good foor the moral and self-image, but the work doesn't inprove with it....
It's my pleasure to look at some great art, as yours.. so np

The way I see it, they just lost their arcane spellcaster and their fighter. Unless they were also enemies. D:

That said, this is a really amazing work. I just had to go to the pencil version to fully realize how insane the level of detail is. It's very enjoyable to look at every little element of this piece. Great work.
