Description

So, there was this black woodpecker who was completely perforating a church tower in Elsfjord church in Vefsn.
(In the northern part of Norway)

Any attempt at scaring it away had failed. It would always come back and put new holes in the wall.

Many ideas were suggested, such as building in the church in a material it couldn’t peck its way trough. (And you know, not wood). This would have been really expensive though, and rebuilding an entire church for the sake of a single bird, would bee a little stupid, wouldn’t it?

And in the mean time the church goers would just have to sit there listening to the machine gun like pecking at the wall.

Or so they thought. Because the church committee had applied for permission to shoot it.

Now the black woodpecker is on an official no kill list.

But anyway the permission was granted.
Just for this one bird.

This is understandable.
Because you see this is what the black woodpecker does.
It pecks its way trough logs and tree trunks, on the hunt for insects.
It has been known to “attack” log cabins and houses.
And it is pretty much impossible to scare off, if it has made up its mind.

But a church?

Now that is new.
