It's a really simple process. Either be good, or be hit with sticks. The choice is yours, really.

I don't know why, but I imagined him having a conversation with Santa and saying "But Santie, don't you think they should just... y'know... be whipped until their backs bleed? Doesn't that seem like the right thing to do?" ("They" in this case meaning naughty children)

Wish they would celebrate more often like the one in Austria, which they have the best Krampuslauf parades ever...

As far I know, here in Hungary Krampus is a lot more common helper of Santa than the elves. Actually, i think elves are more common in the anglo-saxon culture, while in germanic cultures (and also in Hungary, which borrowed a lot from German and Slavic folklore as well) Krampus is more well-known. But he's not evil, rather a little-naughty helper of Santa. And if you were bad, he will give you birsch sticks (virgács in Hungarian).

Here in Switzerland we have the 'Schmutzli', who basically does the same, although he helps St. Nicolaus and not Santa. It's so fascinating to read about how all these figures are interpreted differently in other cultures <3

Sydney, for the love of god please don't post this.
Not only are you giving Deviant Art a bad reputation where people do this but you are also targeting other people and yourself.
These kind of actions are negative to the community and for the innocent kids who read this scared for their lives.
So I ask you to delete the comments (if there is more than this one) and be on your way knowing that you stopped some chainmail.

Tell Clarissa I said she's a pathetic ghost that misleads and scares little kids into sending spam to let others know of her "spooky curse".
Also I have a rare disease where if I get asked out, I'll spontaneously bleed to death.

Love this! Krampus started as a straw goat that used to be snuck into your neighbor's house. The goal was not to get caught. If you succeeded, then they had to sneak the straw goat into someone else's house. What people did before Television and smartphones for entertainment in the winter time! Krampus grew into being one of the Wild Men of Europe and young men as part of their rite of passage, would come back down out of the mountains dressed as the Wild Man Krampus. There have been valentine like cards made with pictures of men dressed as Krampus kissing or courting their sweet heart.
The Catholic church turned Krampus into a demon because of his goat like features. This is around the time that he began to follow Santa and later the Christ Child around as their dark shadow, meant to punish bad children. In some areas, Krampus (Black Peter) became a Moor and today people protest Black Peter, insisting that he is racist and should not be included in Christmas celebrations.
So.... Who wants to sneak a straw goat into someone's house without getting caught?!

Thanks for the information! Never before have I heard of the straw-goat thing. To which nation does this tradition belong, or is it spread over much of Europe?
