I never thought of using fixative (spray, right?) to seal the pencil lines! This is very interesting. Could i ask a question though? Doesn't the spray affect the watercolours in any way? I would have though that the paint would react in similar (see strange ) ways like, lets say, with salt, wax etc..

Sorry for the late reply, I haven't beenΒ  checking my comments lately

Fixative spray, right . This is what I use ( from Schmincke) www.bijansartstudio.com/admin/…
No, there is no effect on the quality of watercolor if you use fixative for pastel ( no acrylic fixative please ) there is no "special effect" like from salt, wax of neo marker whatever. The paint behave ususal. Pixative affects only your pencil lines, they become permanent, it is almost impossible to erase themΒ  with usual eraser ( only using an electrical eraser for ink lines you can remove it, so it is not for everyone Β

From an amateur, thank you very much for the wonderful tutorial!

If you have time for a quick question - what has been your experience with the long term effect of salt? I've seen the technique mentioned on tutorials in the past, but does it degrade the colors more quickly in the long run?

JannaFairyArt In reply to Quills07 [2012-06-03 13:19:02 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the comment, happy you like my tutorial

As far as I know, salt do not degrade colors( at least I have never noticed it and have never heard of it before). Colors can fade with the lapse of time because some pigments are not durable and may lose their brightness and intensity especially when paintings exposed on bright sunlight.

Amazing tutorial...I must try using your yeloow pencil trick one day too.... And like yourself, I normally start with the background, but I think if one starts with the main details first, there is less danger of overfilling the background with too mayn details. D Thanks for the tutorial, janna. ALways love seeing other peoples methods of work!

Ok, sorry for double comment, but i just download it, and i see you use lana hot pressed paper.... There are difference with cotton paper?
I use it, in truth, but sometimes, also if i use fine grain, texture give me troumble... I mean, on your works, don't see too much paper texture (or totally absence).
It's due to difference between lana or cotton?
*sorry for stupid question, as always... You can hate me!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JannaFairyArt In reply to illusorya [2012-03-13 11:32:14 +0000 UTC]

Stefania, Lana HP is also 100% cotton paper( it can be also called satin paper ( or grain satine). ALL hot pressed papers are smooth, some are extra smooth they have almost no texture. I tried different ones like Fabriano HP and Clairefontaine HP but most of all I liked Lana HP. Smoother is only Bristol board ( also by LANA). If you don't want have texture you should try hot pressed paper or Bristol board but Bristol is ssoooo very smooth that I almost can not work on it

PS: you can ask as many questions as you wish I love to ask questions myself and I like to answer them because I feel like I am helping someone to learn something new this is great pleasure

Thanks, you're so kindness!!!!!!

You work so well with your watercolors. My patience level only permits me to work with the fast-drying acrylics. My watercolor attempts have always come out a mess! I always enjoy seeing your tutorials though.

Interesting and informative. Thanks for sharing. I will have to try this. I never learned the proper way to use watercolors. I was self taught for most of my artistic learning. My approach to watercolors is so different.

I love the way this turned out.

Absolutely amazing! I wonder though, do you have the same problem I do when you have to scan your water color onto your computer? My scanner always washes out the colors, and I was wondering if you used a program to fix it or if you just had a special type of scanner or something
Lovely tutorial~

Yes, I used to have some problems with scanning my images in past too, last year I bought a good scanner I am very happy with. It is Epson Perfection V330 I use it to scan my images now choosing professional mode of course where you can adjust the colors, contrast, saturation and so on to make image look as close to the original work as possible. If you are looking for a scanner, I would recommend to get Epson they are said to be very good for scanning traditional artwork

Wonderful tutorial! Enjoy seeing your process. Love the effect explained on how you have the leaves fade into the sunlight - an awesome technique. I have a question. Once you lay the salt down on that area of the paper, can you add anymore watercolor to that area if you need to, or will it mess up the effect?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JannaFairyArt In reply to Carol-Moore [2012-03-11 11:00:21 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, Carol, happy you like it
You can add more watercolor yes but the effect will be different depending on the moment you added it. If you add more watercolor when the paper is still wet you will get a bit differnt salt pattern, more hard edges, more fitting for painting stones then folliage. If you let paper dry firtst then brush salt off and put another layer of watercolor, the white dots which are left from salting will get the color of the wash you applied over them. they will shine through though like white paper shines through a watercolor wash. hard edgest will be softened too, so salt pattern will also change and become not so visible

That's very interesting. I've never tried painting with watercolours on an easel - I thought it was a too liquid medium for that. But now I want to give it go, too ^^
