Description This is a contest entry for the lovely artist Saimain. She has an art book contest for her series Not All Kings Wear Gold (which is an art book series she has going)

I'm hoping that she likes this. It was done a few days ago, but with my play going on, just now got around to submitting it.

All of it is freehand and I wanted to do something with a border. I liked how the characters came out. Please comment and critique on things such as my details and composition. How do you feel about this pic??

Enjoy!

Kelly Kilborn © Julian, Kristoff (a vampire, and werewolf)

EDIT: I changed my description a bit for copyright purposes and description of the contest and characters. I changed the title to "Evening" as well since Julian is a vampire and would not like the sun. Thanks Saimain for the help.

I don't know. I just do. I have a lot of patience when it comes to details in my artworks. My art prof at my college was even astonished at some of my school pieces as well.

I think this is by far your best piece to date. The amount of detail in the framing of the image is amazing, and i love the natural elements being used to contain the figures. The knotwork makes me envious, and your clean crisp pencils are lovely.

i haven't seen an artist do celtic knot things for a long time, which is a pity because they're so awesome. and once again i find the rare example of a dedicated artist devoted to details. and i have to say that the positioning of the three characters is super. it's symmetrical but...not. which rocks.

thank you. I really loved how the composition came out of this pic. And celtic border designs rock my world!! I sadly don't do enough of them though.

you should! because yes, that is sad that there is a severe lacking in that particular design. i think out of all the art i have seen, this is one of four that i remember having a celtic knot design. maybe i've seen more, but the must not have been very stunning, because i can't remember them.

Seriously? Well, you definitely just won coolness points from me. XD It's actually from Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, a graphic novel by Jhonen Vasquez. Don't let the name turn you off--it's one of the funniest, most clever things I've ever read. I highly recommend it!

Firstly, the composition and the details took away my breath, and then those characters are also very charmingly drawn. It's very neatly done and seemingly you really thought it out.

Thanks for the comment! I appreciate it, and I was very happy with the turnout. The art contest I submitted this in for I actually got a runner-up spot, so that means this piece will be in the art book that the artist Saimain will be producing!

makes me happy!!

I love your entire gallery, but this has to be my favourite image. The detail is just amazing!! I love how little Sali's wings come out of the main frame and he looks like he's just gently waving his hand around in the water. My favourite part would have to be the frame - it's got a very Celtic look to it, and the vines hanging from the bottom and the little pool are perfect. Stunning job, I just can't help but stare in awe at it!!

Wow thanks so much for your comments!

I very much enjoyed drawing this out. I wanted to color it, but didn't have enough time for the deadline. I could try to have it colored soon...if I can find the time that is. And the border was all my idea! straight from my head. I love celtic borders (which this resembles) but can never do all those intricate weaving patterns!! They look so hard! I think I could do it with enough patience and a lot of erasers. lol

This is amazing, you done ti freehand? :0 -worship-

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jc2theW In reply to FeatherBandit [2007-04-09 04:21:17 +0000 UTC]

Yep all freehand. there was an artist who commented on it about my circle border not being a perfect circle--suggested that i use a compass or something. but I really like to try and draw shapes freehand to see how close I can get it to look perfect. Besides, I like that the circle border isn't entirely perfect---adds a bit of myself to it I guess.

Wow, this is a very neat piece of drawing, I like the sort of tipped-in style of the eyes, and I realize how Adele's style of hair is very accurately reproduced too, though whether it be coincidence or deliberate, I can't say. The only thing I could chime in is how some of the shapes (e.g. the round border) are sort of too forced in, too purposeful, lacking in a smooth flowing feel. I'd suggest either using a compass or train the hand to pencil down a very flawless circle or instead add some jittery bits so that the slight imperfection itself becomes an apparent style. Nice works, keep it up!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jc2theW In reply to puayen [2007-03-19 17:14:10 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the insightful critique. and yes, my circle border was all freehand. I try to do circles and other shapes without using any compasses or stencils because I like to see how close I can make it look perfect. so I meant to have the circle border slightly off, but that is something I do for myself, to test myself. It looks good to me, and I feel it doesn't take away from the pic.

And Adele's style of hair--I did look at her references and since I do like the way she draws hair, I tried to make them as accurate to the characters as possible. (plus I tend to draw hair like that as well--so it all worked out in the end)

Again, thanks for the comment.
