The Germans were the one who invented the flamethrower in WW1 using firefighters but you had a chance of being killed by a sniper or not burst into flame like the movies. The early flamethrowers were man by two soldiers one carrying the tanks and one shot the flame this was used on enemy troops to strike fear and chase them out of a trench or clear bunkers.
