Description So Christmas has passed, alas, and I still have not uploaded this themed digital painting. I drew it during the holiday season for a Christmas card.

Frodo invited Gandalf over for a nice quiet Christmas at Bag End. Do not say "they didn't have Christmas in the Shire!" I wanted to have a little fun with an unusual scene.

Frodo based on stock by shelldevil [link] - Thank you!

I referenced a picture by Alan Lee to draw Gandalf. So all the credit for that goes to him of course.

The rest, however, is from my imagination.

Created entirely in GIMP over a period of a few hours/days. I spent a lot of time at this one because it was fun! Couldn't wait a whole 'nother year to upload it at the proper time as by then I will have forgotten about it, and it is to be hoped my artistic skills will have far eclipsed this.

gimp eh... yet to try it... must remember to install my tablet onto ubuntu.. well since uve put advanced critique (although im no advanced artist) i think i shall try and rant here.

nahh just kidding.. have only a few things to say..

yesh i know its not wal mart in there but it still does look a lil lacking in festive cheer... to put it simply gandalf and frodo still look like they are discussing the one ring and its doom here..
"merry christmas frodo.. what did you get?"
"a ring my precious... a ring"
"its myyy christmas frodo.. and its myyy christmas present it issss"

ok thats taking it a lil far but seriously.. a lil throwing back of the head in some sort of laughter would add a huge amount of character to the picture!!!

i saw the comment on perspective.. so i wont go into the fact that frodo doesnt look like he is talking directly to gandalf...

what i really really really really like here is the lighting.. the shadows cast across give it the look and feel of a dim place lit only by a fire... very nicely done... all the way down to the objects casting shdows on themselves... awesome work..
and the environment.. looks the picture of what a hobbit hole ought to look like

thumbs up for a great effort here!

Thanks so much, I love extended critique like that!

You should try GIMP. It's free, can't hurt. And if you're lucky your tablet will be fairly easy to install in Ubuntu. Mine was a bit harder. You can find instructions on the Ubuntu forums.

You're right about the lack of festive cheer, lol. It's beyond me why that didn't occur to me, but the characters ARE serious. And the tree and single gift, precious, are a bit plain. Yeah, the perspective is off. Gandalf is looking at the fire, not at Frodo, and Frodo's eyes are actually looking at Gandalf, but you can't see it without zooming in. It looks like a really badly done special effect in a movie.

Love the comments about the lighting.

Again, thank you!

anytime... just spreading some late christmas cheer . yeah... thing is i use ubuntu on my laptop (dual with vista.. have to for obvious reasons) and i use my laptop mainly at uni (its too late to install ubuntu on my desktop.... no proper free partitions anywhere..)

so yeah... i still havent figured out a way to carry my tablet to uni without damaging it... therefore havent bothered to install the tablet on ubuntu..

ps-->actually the tablet itself is fine.. the pen... :S .. any suggestions on carrying a tablet pen around without getting its nib damaged??

Sorry, never transported it. I should think you could do a quick tape job to cover the nib, or tape a normal pen lid over the nib. Or use an eyeglass case or something of that sort. Or how about carving a special wooden holder?

It might take longer to think of something easier than to do one of the last resorts.

Thinking isn't my specialty, but I try it sometimes.

He is! Well, not on purpose, but the proximity would be quite warm. I wish I was better at perspectives when I did this, but that's life. Thanks!
