History:
In 1951, the United States military built a facility in the Nevada desert about 65 miles Northwest of the city of Las Vegas. The site was known as the Nevada Test Site (NTS) and was specially built for the testing of nuclear weapons. After years of nuclear bomb testing, a “Danger Zone” was developed from the heavy radiation left over by the nuclear weapons. It was believed that the “Danger Zone” would be inhospitable to any kind of life, until something was spotted in the area in 2007.

A small lizard was somehow able to survive in the radiation of the “Danger Zone” and had actually begun to mutate as a side effect. The lizard grew to enormous proportions and survived by feeding on other mutations in the area. The US military’s first response was to try and destroy the creature, but this proved to be extremely difficult. The giant lizard exhibited a unique regenerative healing attribute that allowed it to quickly heal from any wounds that it receives. Coupled with its ability to quickly burrow and travel underground, it proved to be very difficult to track. The military eventually gave up on trying to destroy the creature, as it didn’t actually exhibit any type of behavior that was harmful to humans. Instead, scientists decided to study the creature’s unique healing trait for medical benefits.

The scientists named the creature, Spikera for the spikes that cover the majority of its body. Spikera is actually a very docile and territorial creature and will only attack if either threatened or if another creature intruded on its territory. Humans are not in danger as the creature only feeds on the insect mutations inhabiting the area.

Notable Traits:

- Specialized Eyelid: Spikera is used to living underground in the dark and is extremely sensitive to bright lights. He has developed a secondary eyelid that helps act as “sunglasses” and reduces the brightness from the sun when roaming around in the day. These transparent eyelids also help keep dirt from entering his eyes when he is burrowing underground.

- Large Forearms: Large front claws and forearms are specially adapted for burrowing underneath the desert sands, but if needed, they can also act as very effective weapons.

- Spikes: Most of Spikera’s body is covered in long, sharp spikes that are serrated at the tips, making them painfully difficult to remove. These spikes can be projected at attackers and are quickly replaced by new spikes. The spikes also express the mood Spikera is in: retracted when he feels calm and relaxed or extended when he feels threatened.

- Defensive Posture: Like many animals, Spikera will try to make himself appear larger when threatened. The spikes on his back and forearms will extend and rise up and his body will puff up. He will also duck his head down so that his back spikes will point out at his threat.

- Master Tactician: The radiation that created Spikera also caused his brain to grow, becoming highly intelligent. In combat, Spikera will watch closely at his opponent, learning their movements and finding their weaknesses, in order to defeat them. He can also use his environment very effectively against his opponents.
