Thank you for pointing it out to me. I thought already that I was stupid ^^'
I like how you did it, and I think the point"don't put your own personal taste first" is one of the points most overlooked, especially by teenagers . (I know a oekaki (Doodle board even)board where comments normally look like this:" the outlines aren't clean and this looks different to what it is supposed to look" kind a way. Disregarding whether the person there even wanted to know this.
I also don't like if there are people who criticise something , they aren't better at themselves, or just put comments in the room like ' You look like you don't know how to work with the given tools'
Without even mentioning what tools and how this could be changed if I wanted to know.
I am definitely not a good taker of critiques if I didn't ask for it.

Great job with this.
A good balanced critique is an inventory of issues in an artwork. You are basically picking out the good stuff, so the artist does not have to fuss with that and the bad stuff which the artist has to fix.
So the balanced critique is not just showing the good stuff to keep the artist happy, you are basically saying this is good, do not fuss with that.
This allows the artist to focus on the problem areas and leave the good areas alone.
A negative review just lists the bad stuff and if the artist sees something thats not on the list, he or she is not sure if its a good thing or something the critiquer missed.
It would be helpful if the person giving the critique have some knowledge of the media that the artwork is made from. If the artist has a question on how to do something, its easier to give a useful answer.
This goes double if giving a critique of a digital 3d work.
Also the critiquer should hang around to answer questions, not just say something and walk away. If its a blind spot, it might take a bit of time to understand. I have had critiques in which I could not understand because the person that was giving them did not understand that I wanted more into and was not arguing with him.
Its important to be prepared to explain your critiques.

I've encountered far too many people who use their observational talents to bash the work of other people, sometimes with the tagline "well I'm not gonna kiss your boots like SOME people" to justify their over-eager negativity. I won't defend a sycophant, but I hardly believe critique is all about making the other person cry. It's like being an art-bully (provoking people to incite negative reactions), instead of an honest art-friend (caring about the work and hoping to see it improve). These same people sometimes fancy themselves professional critiques and take pride in pointing out everyone else's faults, no matter whether they've great artistic skill or can't even draw a circle. Like climbing a hill of fallen bodies to proclaim yourself King of the Hill at the top.
I think those people could learn a lot from this tutorial, at least enough to know what defines "critique".

A great critique guide, with hilarious illustrations! I love the one about not "wow"ing the artist too much, the illustration for it just cracked me up XDDD

As I was reading it I was thinking, "There ought to be a tutorial to tell people how to accept a critique gracefully". It made me smile to see the comment at the bottom about it being part two.

No, just kidding. Awesome job, I am SO favoriting this, and if it were a print, I'd get it on my wishlist.

I wouldn't mind if my art reminded someone of a better artist, or a famous artist, or even something in life.... it makes a connection between the person and your own art, and leaves a better impression.

Thanks, Tony! Hehe yeah, it can be annoying, although it depends on how exactly the similarity is pointed out and to whom. For instance, if someone were told that their works have a captivating atmosphere like Brom's, something tells me they might not mind!

This is very, very useful, I am trying to learn giving critique, i started attempting this about a month ago, and have been trying from there on. Until now I have never thought of asking if they want the crit first, but I really should take that into account. Critique really is very useful. I had one once on a scrap and with the persons help (wink, wink *TazGold ) I got much further, it looked much better and I had much more fun! The piece may not have come out the way I wished it had it was so much help.
Anyhows, this is very interesting, very helpful and very well-thought out. I can't actually critique this, or at least would find it difficult, because there is nothing wrong with your text, and very little i think could be improved with the design. I love the design, it's nice and simple but effective and clean, nice and sweet. I also love the fact you've made 7 different parts, not one huge big nasty block of text, that looks inviting to read!
The chibis are also very sweet, the representations fit the piece. It just looks attractive, it's not a big tome that might deter people but an attractive, fun, useful tutorial!
Thanks again, I would also appreciate it if I could note you one of my stereotypical critiques (if that makes sense) and then you note me back some suggestions on how I could improve? That would be awesome if you could, but only if you want to, or have the time.
Yet again, great work. Take care, keep safe, a very well deserved DD!
