J-mac is usually softer and less sticky.

I was gonna ask how you managed to keep that thing balanced, but then I saw the rod going into the back. Ha ha! Awesome job! ^_^

A beautiful maquette. It could be a nice, loose sculpt as is and cast in bronze. It's nice to see how quickly you can bulk up the sculpt (2 hours). That would be me at my very fastest, and I still don't know that I could bulk it as nice as you have. My hat's off to you again.
Cheers!!

you must have been sculpting for a pretty long time after such a long while do you ever have days where its hard to get started or is it easy for your now?

MarkNewman In reply to mistergoodface [2009-01-16 20:26:39 +0000 UTC]
More often than you might think.
I have a hard time finishing up a sculpture if it's for myself. If it's a commissioned piece or a contracted project for another company then I have a lot more incentive to finish the sculpt...
Getting paid.

This makes me want to go dig out my clay.. wherever it wandered off to that is.
Never ever move. I can't find half my stuff.

You'll love this.
I've seen people sell things that look like this as finished pieces.
You rock, dude.

I do love this loose, fresh type of sculpture.
These definitely can be considered finished sculpture if they were cast in another material such as bronze.

WOW wow wow.
I saw your volleyball piece also. Amazing too. I was wondering how these are going to be displayed. With sculptures 2/3 scale i usually seem in a standing or sitting pose, but these two are in the air and upside down. Will they also have the arm/pin in the back?

MarkNewman In reply to Paul-art [2009-01-16 20:12:56 +0000 UTC]
They will be displayed mounted on a wall.
There are some other sports figure sculptures I did about 4 years ago for another building at Stanford shown in my gallery that are mounted the way these will be. Football, basketball, diving, tennis and baseball. Check them out.

hey mark ....can i ask you just 2 little things//??
what is this material? Clay/??
and how much it costs where you buy it?
just because here in brazil is a difficult place to find some materials and it becomes a little expensive...
thanks man...and congrats one more time

MarkNewman In reply to dufa-lins [2009-01-16 20:06:49 +0000 UTC]
This clay is oil base clay. J-mac classic clay similar to Chavant oil base clay. This costs around $2.50 per pound. It usually comes in 10 lb. slabs.
I usually buy it in 50 lb. cases.

That's right. This will probably be torn down after I use it as reference for the larger one. The larger one will also be sculpted in oil base clay. Then it'll be molded at the foundry and cast in bronze.
I don't make my own molds anymore. I leave it to the professionals.

Just wanted to clarify my last comment- I meant to say "have you ever molded..." The typo looks kinda rude, sorry 'bout that.

Wow, you have such mastery over the human form. Even though this was done quickly and relatively rough compared to your other sculptures the muscles really nicely.

Very nice indeed. It's a shame you have to have that pin in the middle of the back. I suppose it wouldn't be possible to weight the head sufficiently that it would hang naturally in that inverted position without the need for support?
