Alas! It was destined to happen!
A Vaporeon form of my character Matt!

Likely, this will end up as an alternate canon for him. Or... separate storyline events...? My friend and I came up with several possible ideas how to fit something like this into his storyline canon, so I'll do some explaining.

Much of my character Matt's story remains unknown, due in part to the fact that I haven't quite finished writing it yet. Fourteen years of writing (now thirteen) and still not done? Very likely.
Matt's story chronicled his life from his mid-teen years (He was fourteen at the start of his first story), and ends in his early thirties. During this time, there's -quite- a bit that happens. But life happens too, and that's what led to the boiling question:
Do I keep Matt as an Umbreon, or as a Vaporeon (which I'm honestly more fond of)?
I debated the idea for WELL over a year in truth, but simply "changing" him would destroy his canon entirely. :\ So I had to be more careful in making any kind of decision.
Here instead is the possible/potential storyline...
Matt does eventually make his way to a black market outpost where giving Pokemon unusual traits wasn't out of the ordinary. Think of a fireproof Bulbasaur for example. There wasn't much said for that point in his story, aside from making his way into the outpost weak and weary, and rescuing a young Eevee pup before dying.
That's right. Dying.

Matt dies in my story, although it does have a bit of a twist. His death is also something I'm properly working on altogether...although I can honestly say I did allow him to live. He just ends up dying for maybe like...two hours :\ brain wasn't dead, but the rest of the body shut down. Lame, I know. I'm constantly looking for ways to rework that aspect, because between "hero saves the day" and "hero dies," I couldn't find a middle ground I was satisfied with.
Anyway...

Matt might receive "something" that does tinker with his genetic code. Eevee's DNA is unstable, so really--in the realm of possibility, just about anything can happen--especially with the direction of the current line of games.
The idea is this...: He can't "just change" into a Vaporeon. In my opinion? Stupid.
It also can't be "mood ring" (i.e., he's depressed, he's determined...you know what I mean). He would need to change -gradually-.
Since Matt's story takes place in the real world (as I started writing it truthfully in 2001, shortly before Crystal's North American release...yeah, that long ago), I took into account MUCH of his story involves water, travelling in it, rivers, and even swimming Lake Ontario using driftwood. (yeah try imagining that xD) So, with the gradual approach of water over a period of time, I could see--maybe in the course of a week/two weeks, his body does gradually adopt a more Vaporeon form. And with the absence of water, he maintains his Umbreon form.
THIS IS STILL A VERY ROUGH CONCEPT AND NOT SOMETHING SET IN STONE.
I'm still going back and forth with the idea of it...but, the concept might work.
I'm not wanting something "hybrid" related because it's...too common even the idea I suggested might not work, but at least it begins following the idea that adapting to water would gradually change his form OVER a period of time VS "ohai there water I feel like shape shifting oh well here goes nothing *poof*".

So that's that. I hope you all enjoy at least his concept design c: I will still keep his Umbreon form, but I will and have fully decided to embrace the Vaporeon side of things as well. Here's hoping that 2017 will bring with it promise, hope, love, and MORE Vaporeon! <3
